Isn't "pap" a root word and "ist" a suffix?

Pap-ist one who examines paps

A few of us adopt that name as a badge of our belief (Anglo-Papalist) although it was originally given to us as an insult.
While you are correct in your first usuage of the word, it stands out more as an insult still today, especially by those that have very strong feelings against the CC
I look at well known commentaries and the word papist abounds, never in a friendly way.

True. I think it's all in the intent. I remember a time when the terms "Jesus freak" were a slur against certain Christians, and at another point in time it was adopted as a badge of honor.

For certain people in this thread: The word "Papist" is an offensive and derogatory slur. See for yourself

Just out of curiosity, Jack and Tu Es, what usage would you consider appropriate when one wants to distinguish between "Those in communion with the Pope" and "others who use the name Catholic"? That issue has come up before, and I've never gotten a really good answer -- I avoid "Roman Catholic" because for some English Catholics, that is a term of opprobrium from the days when Catholics were discriminated against, but use it in that one specific usage -- to speak of Roman Catholics vs. Old Catholics or Anglo-Catholics, for example. What would you prefer?
