I am new to any religious faith as my family are not of any religion. However I was christened as a baby. I really wanted to accept Jesus in my heart, but I felt the only way I could do so was for him to show himself to me. I have heard many people say if I pray to Jesus he will answer my prayers. So last night I prayed to Jesus to show himself to me or to show me heaven and hell.

After I had said my prayer I went to sleep. Now this is where I think my prayer was answered, I don't think Jesus wanted to show himself to me that easily, Instead I think I was being tested.

I started to dream as I would normally however after I had dreamt, I found my self in a state between the dream world and the real world. It's hard to explain but it was like I had awareness and emotions that I would normally, but I couldn't speak or move.

Then this is where the sense of fear started to get so overwhelming, I knew something was coming towards me. I could hear footsteps as it was charging towards me. At first I thought it was Jesus coming, however I then got a sense of a presence that made me feel cold, and it was like a electric current going through my body.

Then it felt like my covers off my bed had lifted up, and then all of a sudden I felt a pressure on my chest and I felt like I was being chocked. I couldn't breve and where I was being chocked around my neck, I felt a burning sensation. I then heard a voice, it was a deep voice and it sounded evil. Now this is where it get's strange but it was like what it was saying to me wasn't a language of this world....but for some reason I knew it meant "Do not follow the Lord". And it kept on repeating this to me.

I tried to resist by struggling, but I couldn't so I then tried to cry out for help, but I couldn't. I then manage to say Jesus protect me, then whatever the presence was disappeared.

It was the most terrifying experience I have felt.

Does anyone know what this means?

Could be a nightmare, could be demonic activity. Either way, if this is something evil and attacking you, telling you not to follow the Lord, that is all the more reason to follow the Lord. The Lord is both good and powerful, and will not only not abuse you like this, but he also gives all his children protection from demonic beings. And faith in what he has promised to his children frees us from all lingering fears that we might have concerning this. There is no good reason to not run to Jesus, who is supreme and benevolent.

This was a spiritual attack. Satan does not let go of his territory without a fight. The good news is that the power of the name of Jesus will set these demons to flight. No matter what they say, just keep crying out to Jesus to deliver you and He will.

I used to experience this a great deal when I was first saved. It's a process to get out from under demonic oppression, but if we endure and continue to follow Jesus, pray daily, study His Word daily, He will drive out the demons from your presence.

The Holy Spirit may need to help you do some spiritual housecleaning, though. There are likely many doors to this demonic oppression you opened yourself while sinning before coming to Christ (we can open new doors if we aren't serious about sin while walking with Him, too).

As the Holy Spirit points these things out, just confess them as sin, recognize you have been washed clean by Jesus' blood for the sin, and repent and renounce the sin by closing the door and never doing it again. If temptation comes, call upon Jesus' name and He will help you get over the temptation and eventually He will break the power of that sin over your life forever. It's a process, but you will become stronger and He will teach you how to stay clean before Him and walk in joy and peace and the power of His Spirit.

As long as you're complacent in this world, satan has no reason to upset the apple cart. It's usually better for him to work quietly. But when you begin to make advances, he becomes desperate and tries to impede your progress. As our brothers have written, the name of Jesus is far more powerful than the devil. "The name of the Lord is a high tower; the righteous run to it and are safe". Your dream confirms this. "The gates of hell shall not prevail against" the church (Mt 16). Gates are defensive, not offensive. The picture is of an advancing, victorious church devastating satan's illicit claims.

No matter what the enemy might do, the power of the Name, because of the Blood shed on the Cross, is far greater. Satan's only power is to deceive the believer into thinking he doesn't have authority. What the Christian doesn''t believe he has he won't use. But Jesus has been given "all authority", and He in turn delegates it to us (Matthew 28).

So fear not, and keep pressing in to the Lord. Nothing and no one can stop you, so long as you are steadfast.

It is a spiritual demonic attack. It tends to happen as one turns to Christ, as the devil does not want to give up so easily. You need to invite Jesus into your life as your personal Lord and Saviour. Even so, Christians also come under attack, but then you will be in a position of strength. For if God is with you, who can stand against? Greater is He that is in me, than the one (Satan) that is in the world.

Not that i'm aware of, however I know my mum used to be involved in crystal meditation and she said she had felt spirits around her. She also revealed to me that she had a similar attack when I was a baby, and she said a demon tried to have sex with her.

You may well have a family 'heritage' then. Having someone who understands that to pray for you can bring that to and end.

Upon waking, make the sign of the cross and say the Jesus Prayer. I have actually said the Jesus Prayer while still asleep, and have woken myself saying it after having bad dreams.

Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

As others have said, it sounds like a demonic attack. It could also be lucid dreaming, but that usually accompanies very disturbed sleep patterns. I was once attacked in a similar way, but I didn't have the benefit of protection through Jesus Christ. The attack finally subsided but really left me shaken and I started realizing there is something more to this world that is not easily explained. I'm currently reading the book, The Bondage Breaker by Neil T. Anderson, which is really helping me understand the authority I now have through Jesus Christ. We don't have to be afraid. You saw how quick it ran once you mentioned Jesus!!! This book also outlines various types of attacks and tactics that we don't always attribute to demons (i.e. negative thoughts that pop into our heads). I highly recommend it since it sounds like you may have a family history of demonic attacks.

Although I may not have had the same experience as you, mine is pretty darn close.

I remember it vividly when it first happened; me and my family were staying at a hotel during the week Hurricane Sandy hit, because we had no power for a week. The first morning when I woke up, I felt a horrible presence in the room, and I swear I saw a face in front of me. I was paralyzed in my bed from fear. Now, I was fully conscious and awake when this happened, so no I did not dream this. I told whatever it was that it was not welcome, and I kept repeating in the name of Jesus go away. And just like that, it vanished.
Just after that, I prayed desperately to God part of the Apostles Creed, and telling Him from my heart I need Him. All of a sudden, I was filled with what the Bible says "the peace that surpasses all understanding". It was, I'm convinced, the presence and holiness of God.

I thought I was going crazy, but since then this has happened to me more times than I can count. This is a REAL spiritual battle that needs to be fought. I find the times this stuff happens to me the most is when I fear the demons more than God. It also happens mostly to me when I'm actually doing well in my spiritual walk.

Satan and his demons will try and do everything in their power to turn you away from God, but I know that God is stronger to make you overcome. I don't know how old of a Christian you are now, but always, ALWAYS keep your eyes fixed on Jesus and what he did to save you.

As you witnessed, the name of Jesus is powerful. The devil will never stop trying to win you over - but just simply saying the name of Jesus frees you of any danger. The devil has no power over you and do not ever fear him. Just keep Jesus close to your heart. The Bible says that Jesus will never leave you and He is only a heartbeat away.

Thanks for sharing your story.
There were a couple times when I didn't speak out and just cowered in fear or waited for them to pass through, but they didn't move on -- until the second I decided to tell them to leave. We can feel overwhelmed by huge semi-visible mysterious things that we have no control over .... but really we do have authority through God, over whether they sit in our territories.

So true. If you can picture a stranger pounding on your door, saying, "You have to let me in!" and how fearful that can feel; but then realizing that they don't have a key and you don't need to unlock the door for them.
Even if they huff and puff.

Thankyou for all of your replies, I feel so much better sharing my experience with someone. Since this attack I have experienced another one, but it was different to the first. I felt my self paralysed like I did in the first attack, but this time a felt stronger than I did the first time and I resisted this attack better than I did the first.

I know there is still a battle going on, but I hope and pray I can fine the right path.

I believe you had a supernatural experience, and it should be a sign to you. When the devil tells you not to follow the Lord then the only logical thing for you to do is to ignore the demon and follow Jesus.

Overall,it seems to me that you got an answer to your prayer.

Blessings,

Alan
