  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm interested in getting an engineering degree right now. But i'm in a pretty rough situation. I don't have a job or vehicle. I'm living about 20 miles away from the local college so I really don't have any means to get to college right now. I'm assuming I qualify for financial aid so I will be applying for that. How much do you usually get for financial aid? I've been told i'll receive money for school and also living expenses. Do I still need to get a part time job for the extra cash coming in? I'm wanting to get a place close to the college so I can walk there. Do I need to get the job first before I register for college to receive the financial aid or will the aid be enough to get me a place down there? Is there some sort of housing aid or program I can look into to help me move into town? I live in Oregon.

That's an option, but since the distance is ~32 km it's a little harsh.

How about local traffic? Any buses or perhaps someone who's already commuting?

I hope someone will be able to help :) best of luck.

Although an engineering degree would most likely require classroom attendance, have you thought of getting started with online classes for your gen-ed? This would allow you to start school and give you time to decide on the job/living situation when you have to physically attend classes.

The OP could also take online classes with another institution, provided his local college would give credit for that.

Like others are saying, limit your loans. But the trouble with engineering degrees is that they are typically stuffed to the brim with core classes, so starting out taking gen-eds only online would probably put you on the 5 year plan. But if you are going to have to work to support yourself, taking your time to get through the classes with good grades and as little debt as possible may justify taking more than 4 years.

Roommates are a good way to go. See if you can get a place within biking distance (20 miles seems a bit far). Get a part-time job to pay rent.
