The problem is, you are allowing yourself to be hung up on incidentals. There is nothing in the Old Testament you need to worry about. You can view it as stories, history, fables, what have you. Right now the main thing in question is this, do you want to have eternity to explore the universe as a child of God or do you want to be on the outside with no chance of ever looking in? That is a paraphrase of verses from the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. That is where your attention should be. I can tell you first hand, from personal experience, miracles do happen, but again, that is not the question. This is the question, are you willing to accept the fact that Jesus sacrificed himself so you would have a chance at eternal life, just you, no one else? Are you willing to turn over all of your problems and your sins to him and let him deal with what is far too big for any human to handle? Are you willing to accept that Jesus is Lord of your life and that his really does love you with a love that goes beyond anything we can imagine? If you are willing to tell him that, you will have been born into eternity and nothing the world can do can change that.

If you say Christ existed, he said the things he said and rose from the dead and that he is the son of God then such questions seem pointless in comparison. The fearful thing is forsaking all to obtain the all surpassing knowledge of God's love grace and peace in Christ. The really fearful thing is to miss it altogether.

Well like now I kinda don't want to say I'm a sinner. Like I don't know. Maybe my ego or something idk. Btw nice cats in your picture :p

What does it mean to be a sinner?

To sin, means to “miss the mark.” The Bible declares, “all have sinned; all fall short of God’s standard.” (Romans 3:23)

What is God’s standard?

To perfectly keep His Law, the Ten Commandments, for your entire life. Keep all of the Law, then you are sinless, and God will let you enter Heaven. Have you ever:

used God’s name as a curse word? _____Yes _____No

stolen anything? _____ Yes _____No

told a lie? _____Yes _____No

This is just three of the ten. Answer yes to any? Uh-huh! You are guilty of breaking God’s Law. You have sinned. The “wages (penalty) of sin is (physical & spiritual) death.” (Romans 6:23)

If you die, without being saved, you will be eternally separated from God and your loved ones. After death, life does go on, either in Heaven (with God) or in Hell (away from God), depending on your acceptance or rejection of God’s plan of salvation.

I want to be a Christian but I can't. I would like to believe in god but the thing is I just can't due to certain questions I have in mind. Like the redsea parting, the ark and a few more. I don't know maybe it's because I'm scared of death that I'd like to believe in god. If it matters I was sort of a Christian years ago and well kind of just lost complete faith for reasons.

Wow! You sound just like me. I think the best advice to give you is to simply tryout believing that God and all the events in the Bible are true and that a lot of the stuff you know of in the world that you are lead to believe is true is actually false or deceptive. Try renewing your mind.

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:2.

Think outside the box. But be warned, some people may say you are schizophrenic and need to be hospitalized for doing this. Dont fall for it, its simply a test of your faith. I was hospitalized and diagnosed with schizophrenia three times for "magical thinking." I was not mentally ill. I was simply in the process of trying to "figure it out."

"But he who stands firm to the end will be saved." Matthew 24:13.

God honors your skepticism at this point in your life. In fact, he gave us all a MIND so we can discover that the Christian Faith is truthful intellectually which is part of the reason for the faith we have in our Creator . I am of the intellectual type also, and I required a sound rational explanation for some things of Christianity instead of just believing in the Bible cause it had a lot of crinkly pages ; I put the Christian Faith , Jesus, his resurrection, the Bible, etc., to a hard test and when I was done, I was satisfied intellectually and all that remained was surrendering my pride over to Christ and let him take charge of my life. The more I relingquished my control, the greater I saw positive changes in my life, the way I treated others, increase in patience, empathy, motives, and realizing that I have great purpose while on this earth. Also, to have an eternity to look forward to with my own personal Creator who loves me so much . What an exciting true hope based on reasoned and rational promises made by the creator himself who proved himself to all mankind.

The absolute best book I can tell you about is this one : " I Don't Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist' from www.amazon.com for a few dollars used. The first half of the book deals with why Atheism requires more faith than Theism and the last half of the book has a clear understandable explanation and lists that prove the Bible trustworthy, proves Jesus really rose from the dead , and why all other competing religions are thus, wrong to follow.

I hope you will get this book cause its what you need in your journey at the moment. Then lets you and I discuss some of its highlights , ok ???!

Hello Dr Josh,We've talked before. Don't worry about you're age and don't worry about the shot of pride that it takes to admit you've committed sin. Unfortunately you have, I have, If you take a step outside and look around, everyone you see has many many times a day. It's not an exclusive club so admitting it will not be a shot to your pride. Now admitting what you have done is between you and GOD so your confession is your own. To be a good person is nice. I'd like to say I am, that's a matter of opinion though my kids and some others like to say I'm a jerk lol. I'd like to tell you that you're a little young to think about death but that you'd be misleading you. Jesus says no one know the day or the hour and in all honesty you can spend your entire life being the best person you can be but if you aren't saved and haven't asked forgiveness unfortunately your good deeds won't be enough. You are saved by grace through faith. As for the problems you've had about the Red sea and the Ark and maybe some other things believe it or not that is a pretty common things and jesus actually explains that in the Bible. He says that some peoples eyes will be closed to things, their hearts will be hardened to truths and things ill be hidden for a time then revealed. He also told a parable about a farmer sowing seed, this was actually talking about a preacher preaching the word of GOD. If you feel your life lacking it is for a reason and you realizing it a the first big step. Might I suggest you start reading the new Testament and what Jesus taught and his promise and as you grow in faith and talk to people then explore deeper into the old testament. And please even though it may seem harder to understand. And if you have any problems, questions, or if you just want to talk about anything don't hesitate at all to send me a message. I will try my best to shed some light on any question you may have.

Isn't the first step in becoming a Christian belief in the existence of God? You can't truly ask God for forgiveness until you have some reason to believe He exists. That's why things like the Red Sea can be a stumbling block.

Romans 12:2 Is one of my favorites. It's a dangerous thing going down the rabbit hole and truly finding out the things that are real and the things that are a complete lie. I was amazed to find out how closely everything is connected and how it truly does all fall back to the exact account of the creation. It's taken a very long time and I've questioned my sanity too along with many others. Most things are pretty simple though. I just wasted a ton of time finding out that I should've just taken the Bibles word for it.

The step in being a Christian is to believe in your heart that Jesus is the son of God, Died for our sins, Rose again, and though you haved sinned through him you can be saved. In you knowing that and only that you are saved. That is what matters. Everything else will come in time. Jesus says you need faith the size of a mustard seed. Just a tiny little bit of faith can move a mountain.

Yes. It's hard to see how you could follow Jesus in any meaningful way without believing that God exists. Sometimes there are stumbling blocks to deal with. Some people find that as they get some experience with God they're able to believe in the OT history. Others, like me, believe that the editors put together recent experiences with God with traditional stories of their people. It's important for people to realize that not all Christians think that those stories are necessarily historical.

One thing that people have to remember that not only did Jesus preform true miracles and do things physically but he also spoke in parables. The Bible is filled with many things, physical, metaphorical, and prophetic. Even though I take the Bible at face value I do not leave it at just that because I can't, I've been shown and proven that's there's so much more to it. It's like taking a flat piece of paper off of a table and folding it into a cube, then folding it into a tesseract. Or better yet doing the golden ratio experiment with a rectangle. As you pray for wisdom and read deeper you find more and more.

So just keep it simple, if you believe in Jesus, you are a Christian. You don't have to worry about anything else. Only fear god and keep the commandments. Let me be clear that i’m about to take a sentence out of context.

tonnerkiller said:

Christianity is about you and your walk with God.

That’s what bothers me about this discussion. Christianity isn’t about me. It’s about God and Jesus and the Kingdom of God. Yes, Jesus has called me to be part of it, and I’ll be held accountable for how I respond. But still, it’s not about me, nor about figuring out just exactly what the minimum is that I have to do to be “saved.” The Good News is that God is in control, and he has sent Jesus to establish his rule (his kingdom).

For Dr. Josh: I think the real question is whether when you read the Gospels, you see Jesus as God present with us, and whether you are called to be his disciple. If you do, then issues like whether OT events happened as recorded are details. Many of us accept the conclusions of archaeologists that they didn’t. Jesus doesn’t demand that we reject science or archaeology. He demands that we repent (which in this context means that we change our hearts and minds) and follow him.

Why would Christianity not be about each individual and their personal walk and relationship with God?

If we are to keep the first commandment and the most important commandment as Jesus said, than how can you love and devote yourself to someone that you have no relationship to? Why would God put that as the most important commandment if He did not value our relationship and our love for Him as utmost important?

I'm not getting what you are saying at all.

I don't want to appear to forward, but why are you asking someone what you should be believing about God? Why not ask God Himself? You do have access to Him through prayer, the Holy Spirit and through the salvation of sin through Jesus Christ.

I think you are over-complicating it.

Do you believe in God?

Yes or no?

It's really not all that difficult. I think you may be over analyzing it and getting so many opinions that you are more confused than when you first started.

My advice: Start praying. Not a formal prayer, but just talking to God about stuff. About your life. Asking Him to send you answers to your question. Reading a little bit of the Bible each day, say 15 minutes. You are not doing yourself any favors by not taking control of your own faith. The Bible talks about a tree that moves any way the wind blows. That is what you are in essence setting yourself up for here. Get spiritual with God. You have enough information, now do some soul searching. Within yourself, leave the questions alone for a while. Just chill with God.

Well, Agnostic is promising at least. ;)

Like, why didn't God forgive the first innocent humans the first time they sinned? Instead of waiting however long and going through the whole Jesus thing to get that done. And after drowning the whole world for their sins.

What is that?

Yes, even long time Christians have questions. That's good. I heard once that someone said , you can't see behind the scriptures until you stop using your critical mind. When God is a spirit and he is the word, and frail humans hoped to speak in our languages to prove he was behind the words, it is truly, at least speaking for me, a matter of letting the spirit help you see the message.
Because if you read the Bible as historic fiction it's main Character would be easily said to be the most aggregious genocidal maniac ever recorded in fiction or fact. And being he's all knowing and tells you everything is pre-planned and you're living the blueprint he set out. And regardless of the free choices you make omniscience told you in scripture that he saw that coming too.
So where's the rub?

The elect are said to be those God foreordained to find their way to salvation. If that's true, those who feel called to seek him will not be swayed. Those who aren't sure are maybe not on the right path. If it is all as God wills, and I believe that, don't worry.
If you are his he knows your name. And no man shall ever remove you from his hand.

Speak your doubts. Maybe someone can help you see things a different way.

Maybe you are right about that. Should I jus believe in Jesus and I'll be fine is that all. Do I have to follow the other rules or no?

From a Lutheran vantage point the concept of obedience can be a bit of a paradox.

On the one hand the reality of us as sinners means that we can't be righteous by trying to follow God's commandments, the irony in fact is that the more we try to follow God using our own strength the more we fall, the more we fail, and the more obvious our shortcomings become and so the Law compounds our guilt.

On the other hand faith, we say, produces good works. Faith, which is not of ourselves but the gift of God, exerts good works through us. It is never our righteousness, but God's righteousness in us.

Martin Luther was irritated by those who argued against him who said that by teaching justification through faith alone that he was saying good works don't matter, or that he was teaching a form of antinomianism (antinomia meaning "without law"). On the contrary, Luther writes concerning faith:

"Faith is a living, bold trust in God’s grace, so certain of God’s favor that it would risk death a thousand times trusting in it. Such confidence and knowledge of God’s grace makes you happy, joyful and bold in your relationship to God and all creatures. The Holy Spirit makes this happen through faith. Because of it, you freely, willingly and joyfully do good to everyone, serve everyone, suffer all kinds of things, love and praise the God who has shown you such grace. Thus, it is just as impossible to separate faith and works as it is to separate heat and light from fire! Therefore, watch out for your own false ideas and guard against good-for-nothing gossips, who think they’re smart enough to define faith and works, but really are the greatest of fools. Ask God to work faith in you, or you will remain forever without faith, no matter what you wish, say or can do." - Martin Luther's Introduction to Paul's Epistle to the Romans

This hearkens back to what St. Paul writes in Ephesians ch. 2,

"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God--not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what He has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life." - Ephesians 2:8-10

Further Lutherans will speak of what's known as Coram Deo/Coram Hominibus; that is "Before God" and "Before man" and speaks of how we should understand our relation before God and man. Before God we should live and think as though only the Gospel matters--the grace of God given to us sinners on account of Christ by which we are saved apart from works and the Law; before our fellow man we should live and think as though only the Law matters, how we treat and care for our neighbor and seek to do good to all creatures. Or to put it another way, God doesn't need our good works, but our neighbor does. It's our neighbor who needs food in his stomach or a roof over her head.

We must further understand that "We love Him because He first loved us." Being a Christian is not first about what we do, but is about what God has done for us, and to trust upon Him believing Him. It is out from this faith that flows love and good works, love of God and neighbor and doing good to our neighbor.

In this life we will never be a perfectly holy, just, or pious people, we will remain sinners until our dying gasp; which is why we must look upon Christ not ourselves; it is Christ who justifies us--that is, makes us just. But because we have faith we can look to Christ, to the power of the Holy Spirit, to use us and work us to do good and urge to good works so that we might be a people that looks out for our fellow man, who considers the needs of others above our own, and be a Christian people in our communities and vocation in life. Never looking upon the works themselves as improving our status before God, but thanking and praising God as He uses us to do His will.

Look to Christ, and and let the love of Christ spurn you to do good. But never look to the works themselves, but only to the Christ who saves you.

James 2:19-20
19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe--and tremble!
20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?

An intellectual assent, a belief, in God, or in Christ as the Redeemer of humanity, is no greater a feat than what a demon can boast. As James points out here, "even the demons believe -- and tremble!" Are demons going to heaven? No. Are they disciples of Christ? No. Clearly, then, mere belief in Christ or God is not sufficient to obtain salvation and a relationship with either one. The kind of belief the Bible calls us to is the sort that emanates from the heart, not just the mind. It is a belief that is powerful enough to shape our thoughts, attitudes and conduct. And that belief, Scripture tells us, must be intimately connected to a love for Christ and God. Our Maker intends that our conduct, shaped by our belief, is motivated by love for Him.

1 John 2:5-6
5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.
6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
