Here's a quick tip: I like to keep a "whatever" notebook with me wherever I go. When ever I have a spark of creativity, even if it's just a paragraph and it doesn't make sense, I write it down in my notebook. Then later I'll go through it and pick out my ideas and put them together into a story. This way I don't get stuck on whole stories at a time.

I have kids. Don't have time for any of the hobbies I really want to get into (chess, guitar, etc.)

That's sort of what I did with flight simulation. I just went out and bought a flight sim and started learning to fly. It rocks.

But I don't think I'll get back to writing fiction. I really was not that good.

I would, however, like to write a book before I die. I think that would be cool. I just have no idea what to write about.

Your kids will get older before you expect them to. Investing the time with them now will pay off in being able to talk with them when they're older.

I used to write, too.

Several years ago, I was getting published in local newspapers and magazines on a regular basis.

Now, it seems like I never have time anymore. Or maybe it's a lack of motivation. Or both.

I hate to use the wife and kids as an excuse - because the truth is, they would all support my efforts if it really meant that much to me. I think most of us can honestly say the same thing, and if we really want to write, we need to stop slacking off and just get to it already.

I also had a hard time writing. I didn't write for a couple years. Then a friend of mine challenged me to give up playing video games for six months. In the first two months I wrote my first book. For me giving something up to God made all the difference in the world. He gave me back hours of time and filled it with something that I really wanted to do and that was much more fulfillling.
