Nothing undermines the reading and meditating of Scripture.
Indeed, listening to music to promote some emotional feeling is merely that, and nothing more. We are to be mindful and whatever we do, that it is for the glory of God, and not merely give that flippant excuse of an answer, " I'm enjoying God's creation, and therefore giving glory to God."
As for Christians, listening and worshipping in song, requires discernment. Its easy to slip into the habit of listening to music to match and use it as empathy to match our degenerate moods and deceitful heart. And also just to unwind a little, and question what is wrong with that? Certainly if we get more "excited" or "draw-nearer" to Christ through song, more than we do in reading God's Word, there is a major heart issue.
As for song, as long as it promotes your sanctification in Christ Jesus and exalts God and not merely his creation, by all means exercise your liberty on the matter of music, so long as the lyrics do not promote sensuality and other patterns of the world. If it is for personal comfort, happiness or relaxation, and God is out of the picture... well thats another storty. Personally I cannot stand most contemporary christian music as the emphasis is not truly on God but rather man... nothing compares to the Word of God. Arguing about music is a rather moot point...
