• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have been using an ecigarette. It is propalene glycol or vegetable glycerin depending on what "juice" you use. It gives of vapor instead of smoke. It is 3/4 of the way to smoking. You recharge your eccaigrette and puff away and get your nicotine and the flavor of choice weather it;s a tobacco substitute or anything from coffee to cheesecake to black licorice. I have quit smoking using this product but still feel like I am smoking because I am still getting nicotine and puffing on something. I hear conflicting info if nicotine causes cancer or not in and of itself. Never the less I am off the butts. Still got a habbit though. Any thoughts about these things. I know some of you have heard of them. They have been on the news for a while now.

Hi! My brother had a few problems before a few days, when we met with our family specialist, then he told us that she had lung cancer. He investigated about my brother that why he had it. After his careful examination, he told us that smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer and is a risk factor for numerous other health conditions. And the name of our specialist is W. Michael Alberts, MD, FCCP, President of the American College of Chest Physicians. "

I've found exercising has always helped

Exercise could only give us benefits, it rarely gives bad effects to us. Maybe using e-cigarette is a first step to quit smoking. It is not easy to quit smoking immediately, e-cigarette is better than real cigarettes which contains nicotine. We need a great discipline in order to achieve our goal.

Interesting thing in this, is that nicotine was not really researched before the patch and gums came about. It has been clinically shown that nicotine, by itself, has several beneficial properties. It has been shown to be effective in reducing complications with Alzheimer's. It has been shown to reduce substantially the risk of developing Parkinson's. It has been shown to have beneficial properties in dealing with ADD and some cases of depression. And a number of other physical conditions are helped or greatly reduced in their occurrence. There is a major move in medicine to start prescribing nicotine for various maladies. This information is readily available all over the net, and not just random musings, but actual reports from medical research.

Not saying in any way that this information makes e-cigs almost a grand slam way of quitting smoking, but it does show promise that, as opposed to smoking, it actually may have the opposite effect and be beneficial to those that use them. Either way, it is a major improvement over sucking in all the nasty stuff that is in tobacco smoke.

The real effects of nicotine were not seriously looked at before the advent of quit smoking substitutes. It is amazing how some things that, based on opinion, were detrimental, are actually now being understood to have beneficial properties. It was the delivery system (smoking) that was the problem regarding nicotine. So now, it is being shown that nicotine is not the big bugaboo that many believed it was.

My wife and I both smoked but when we decided to quit she was able to Cold Turkey.
Me though… that's another story.

I tried cold turkey for a few months, and the cravings never left me. I could not see lasting more months in the cold sweats I was having so I gave in.

I tried the gum and patch. And ended up doing that and smoking still. (Quite the rush I would not recommend)

I even tried herbal cigarettes made from assorted roots, spices and moss and that did not work.

The E-cigarettes though worked like a charm for me. Where nothing else would work for me the Ecig worked right off the bat. No withdrawals, no craving to have a safety pack of smokes in the freezer.

We're all so very different and I know ecigs won't be for everyone trying to quit… I just know it is nice to:
1. Not have my lungs filled with tar
2. Not have the stained fingers
3. Not smell like an ashtray
4. Not inhaling the 200+ chemicals
5. Not be craving a cigarette daily.

Yay I hope you have continued success I also quit this way and while I do still smoke the e- cig I have been quit a long time and don't miss them. The advice I got was don't be in a hurry to jump off the e- cig and end up floundering . Best of luck I can taste and smell again and no mess! highly recommend this method :)

The great thing with the e-cigs is that all you are getting is the nicotine and not the other more harmful side effects that come with smoking a regular cigarette. They even make the e-juice without nicotine as well, so that in time, you can slowly step down from the strength of the nicotine to where there is no nicotine and just the, what I call, the flavor vapor :)

Also, there are so many different manufactures of e-cigs that at times it can be overwhelming to choose what is best for you. The ones that you see in the gas stations, etc, the disposable ones and/or the starter kits - those are nice, but are pretty expensive once you need more of the carts. There are those that you can use where you just have to buy the device and then you can actually just use the e-juice and not carts. Those are the ones with the tanks on them - they are a bit bigger, but actually do offer and provide a better real smoking experience. Flavors vary from tobacco all the way to watermelon, pineapple, etc - so many choices and such little money and time :)

Let us know how the progress is going brother and may God guide you through all of this

Eric

Congratulations on this step. It's huge! Chaplains aren't supposed to smoke and I felt guilty about it plus possibly doing harm to myself and making my wife an early widow. So I switched to ecigs 2 years ago. I'd tried everything and wasn't ever successful until I went to them. I pray the very best for you and all of us in this thread.

Faithfully,

ecigarette's are made in China.

You might want to watch and read this before you use that.

Not that it's anything magical, but I just detached myself, and asked God to support me, and He did. I was addicted to myself. I consumed porn, alcohol, food, thankfully no drugs, cigarettes. I would appear clean to the outside world, but my inner life was otherwise. I found God in 2006, and began dying to self. Porn was the first to go, alcohol next, food next, cigarettes, and then there was one more...consumerism. Had to have the latest junk. Underwater diving camera. Flat panel TV in every room. Already had the photo stuff, now I gotta have an HD Camcorder. Sorta black Friday for someone who earns money. When I desired that camera, I made every excuse to get it. and I got it. But my excuses dried up. The excuse to buy the camera flew out the window. What could I do??? I could not say anything, and keep the camera. Or I could spill the beans on myself and send it back. I sent it back, as much as I wanted it. (Sounds kinda Hobbitt-ish, eh?) I was able to do this because a few months earlier I gave up smoking the same way. It was a selfish habit, and I just needed to detach it from me and let it go. Prayers helped, let me tell you, it wasn't of my own accord. But sinceI gave it up, I've been near divorce, and near layoff, survived both, and survived two job-searches without ever taking a puff of a cigarette, a patch, or a prescription.
Regarding e-cigs, I just don't get it. I was in a wedding several weeks ago, and all these young dudes and ettes were dragging on these things just outside the church. Seemed to me to be an acknowledgement that the nicotine has you ... Not judging, at all. Just saying, it's as distasteful to me as tattoos. I won't judge someone because of it (one of my best friends is covered in tatoos...)but I don't get them...
