• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

That is just a hangover from Medieval times when anything 'non spiritual' was seen negatively. What you could paint, write about or compose music for had to have some 'religious' theme or it was deemed sinful. The church once opposed surgery because of its beliefs about the human body.

Living in God's world means that information is available for anyone who studies it, whether Christian or not.

But is there not something in the Bible which says anything not of Christ is sinful?

The reason they said psychology was bad was that apparently psychology attempts to explain man's problems without the Word of God. It said that an alcohol addiction is not seen as sin but as a "chemical dependance" in psychology. It said Christian counselling was just as bad as secular because it tried to find a compromise between the two. It was also against psychiatry.

Firstly, but what is not 'of Christ?. This is His world, created and held together by Him.
Col 1:16-18 16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.NIV

Thus people who study His world will simply discover what has been created. They may think about it differently of course, and we must be alert to when that happens. But how the blood flows around the human body and how we make it is information independent of one's beliefs. Psychology will give is information about how we function - how we learn, feel about some things, how we are influenced by our surrounding culture and society, how we can malfunction and react and so on. Christians don't learn differently from non Christians, or never get depressed. An aspirin for a headache works the same for both too.

Scripture tells us that God created the world. Science tries to discover how He did that, although some will use science to say there is no God. Scripture does not have any reference to most of the things that are part of any modern society, from cars and computers to antibiotics and face creams. Yet Christians happily use them. Psychology and Psychiatry are just the same - a mixture of information and views. I have seen the tragic results first hand where a pastor has applied simplistic quoting of verses to complex behavioural problems and that utter ignorance has caused immense suffering.

Those were good comments you made. The area of our relationship with the whole of life needs a good airing.
