what are great british dishes? britain for the longest time was ridiculed for having the worst food out of all developed nations. only times being bested by finland with it's crazy concoctions such as shark burritos. have you ever had british bar food? you honestly need to be plastered in order to a.) eat it, b.) consider it as good.

I already mentioned some, but I will give you a list if you like.

But I would like to point out that one needs to be plastered to eat a lot of American bar food as well. And even French bar food.

So, list of great British dishes:

Beef Wellington
Shepherds Pie
Toad-in-the-Hole
Yorkshire Pudding
Lancashire Hotpot
Fidget Pie
Arnold Bennet omelet
Eton Mess
Cornish Pasties
[bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]-a-leekie soup
shortbread
Mince Pies
Anything with Stilton
potted shrimp
pea soup
bangers and mash
fish pie
chicken tikka masala
summer pudding
trifle
treacle tart
sticky toffee pudding

have you eaten in a bar in the U.S.? unless you hate sausages, pizza, hot dogs, burgers, chicken wings and the like. unless you are talking about old, small dingy bars that only have popcorn, pretzels, and pickled eggs.

America has so many immigrants from the ages past - we dont have any particular 'American dishes' unless pot roasts and casseroles count?

Some say hamburgers [German] and hot dogs [German] are considered American.
Our pizza is different than Italy's. As well as our Mexican dishes in restaurants - and the Chinese isnt even authentic to what Chinese actually eat.

Things were 'changed' to meet the tastes of our varied cultures.

Authentic foods dont exist except in ppl's homes.

Walking Dead and Lost are the two best character-driven shows I've seen in years! I think people that don't watch it think "oh brother, zombies, must be mindless junk," but wow, it's a real character study and it gets intense. The zombies are background noise and the external threat. The human interaction and relationships and character development are the key to it all. I thought Lost was a really awesome character study. You don't have to watch British shows to get good character dynamics and development.

I thought Lost got pretty wild late in the series, very late, but the story arcs were complex, the individual vignettes about each character's buildup to the island and their unique set of circumstances that fashioned their character, well, I thought it was superb. Michael Emerson was epic on that show, Terry O'Quinn as incredible, and I think overall there weren't sexy models on it. Walking Dead certainly isn't a flattering supermodel show! Look at 'em! LOL...but I will say with conviction that Lauren Cohan on there, pretty dang-blasted spectacular....woo-wee! (pats head and blushes) :p

but as far as losing their way and not having story arcs in Lost, I rarely disagree with ya, but I sure do on this one. Those story arcs were so interwoven and complex, I was impressed! They were X-Filesish only with more human elements...

Clearly we have different viewing preferences - I tend to like rather complicated, character driven shows. I also think one advantage you see with British tv is sort seasons, and often fewer seasons as well. So you dont get issues like on Lost where they are just trying to fill more time and they get all crazy and lose their way. Instead there is a real story arc - a bit like you get on some HBO series almost.

Also, they seem to have fewer hang-ups about having actors that do not look like models - even in sexy roles.

Dinner - well, what are the great American foods you are thinking of here to beat out the great British ones. Not, I think, the cheeseburger, or the pogo! The US has some great regional foods, as does the UK, and both have some terrible flops too, and increasingly people are eating disgusting processed things. Last night I had a great British recipe which was chicken cooked with apples, bacon, cider, cream, and sage. It was really yummy.

A lot of those things - hot dogs! - are really pretty disgusting if you are looking for real food. And yes, the cooking in many American pubs is bad. Pub food, everywhere, is often pre-made frozen stuff, cheap, cooked badly. So it sucks.

Good pubs, everywhere, have good food.

Everyone has some things they like and some they dont. I am sure there are some American classics you do not like too.

And yes, chicken tikka is British. The British were colonial powers in India, and there are a ton of curry houses in the UK. There are a number of Indo-British dishes that have developed out of that cultural meeting. (Fish and chips are another example of a cultural meeting - in that case Jewish and Irish).

My mom got addicted to Vegemite when she went to Australia. Taste like salty vitamins. I believe the stuff in England starts with a M. Marmoset? I dunno, something like that.

That luskfish or however it is spelled, there are parishes in Wisconsin that make that stuff up during Lent.

Marmite.
I LOVE MARMITE!
It supposedly has a stronger, more pungent taste than Vegemite.

Lutefisk.
Bleh

In Sweden they have something similar, but even worse. (Or so I'm told)
Called Surströmming.
Anytime you get the words "Fermented" and "Fish" together, I'm getting as far away as possible.
There's a good reason it is not eaten in the house.
My friend who lived in Sweden said he could not stand the stuff.

With regards to British food in pubs, PASS! There are certain British foods that are similar in Eastern Europe/Poland. With that said, give me the chicken wings, hot dogs (Pick your sausage [Viennese sausage, bratwurst, Italian, kielbasa), fries, the nachos grande with extra jalapenos, the greasy burger topped with onions vs. ...black pudding (Kaszanka) or any meat that is in gelatin (Mieso w galarecie).

And yes, chicken tikka is British.

It's as much British as a chorizo is Japanese.

It's Indian.

First, you side with German food over Italian. I could understand - somewhat - because you grew up with it...but to pass on Italian for British?!
