  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

As odd as it sounds Catholicism for Dummies is a good book for that.

This one is good as a short intro: Outlines of the Catholic Faith

The Compendium to the Catechism is in good question and answer format for people wanting to know more about the Catholic faith.

Catholicism for Dummies and The Compendium you could probably get at a library or cheap on Amazon.

.

You can find it on-line for free: http://www.vatican.va/archive/compendium_ccc/documents/archive_2005_compendium-ccc_en.html

And here is the Cathechism: http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/_INDEX.HTM

The best you can do is going to attend a Mass (we have usually also Saturday eve Mass, so you can go the Sunday morning to your church too)

Hi Natalia :D Glad to see you!

Henri Nouwen has written many spiritual books that are concerned with spiritual encouragement, suffering, compassion, etc.

My favourites are Life of the Beloved, Bread for the Journey (daily Scripture reflections), and The Inner Voice of Love.

Some books written by the Saints might be nice, too. Like St. Augustine's Confessions - personal favourite! - St. Therese of Lisieux's Story of a Soul, and St. Theresa of Avila's Interior Castle. But they are heavier reads, I think.

C.S. Lewis is also pretty fabulous, though not Catholic; his logic concering how one may come to believe in Christ is really great. It makes faith seem more logical and indeed wise than most people - even those who have faith but struggle with it - may think. Mere Christianity is a good book, as well as The Screwtape Letters. Screwtape is really interesting. It is a fictional correspondence between two demons concerning their "patient" - a man they are trying to tempt away from faith. It is really thought-provoking.

But Natalia, you are doing out of curiosity or for personal reasons?
To my knowledge a EO that converts to Catholicsm only has to do a small course and a profession of faith. And If a person convert to a Eastern Rite Parish does not even need to learn a new liturgy. And the EO mysteries are valid sacraments in CC eyes since the EO are in Schism with the CC and not in heresy.
And a new Bible is not really needed because the OSB has all the books and a few more.

As resoto pointed out, the Eastern Catholic Churches have pretty much the same customs and traditions as their Orthodox counterparts. So that's one good place to look.

From the Latin perspective, let me plug a book by a friend of mine :holy::

Catholic and Loving It
http://www.amazon.com/Catholic-Loving-Traditions-New-Generation/dp/0867168072

It has tons of great traditions and customs, especially for particular feast days.
