  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

You could get him any number of things:

1)A nice set of rosary beads - black for boys.

2)A book on the Saints, one with lots of pictures preferrably. If you look at the religious books of mine which saw the most use by myself when I was a kid, it was my "Book of the Saints". I loved that book, and I still have it... scotch-taped binding and all!

3)Some childrens leisure reading books (The Narnia Series by C.S.Lewis comes to mind, and it is Christian themed).

4)A version of the Roman Missal for children (I still have mine from my First Communion, and it came complete with Rosary beads which I still have).

5)A religious medal (maybe of the Blessed Virgin Mary or his patron saint).

Hope that helps.

Can I get these things at a Bible book store? And thanks for answering me, too! :)

I babysat this little guy from the time he was 15 months until he went to kindergarten, so he is truly near and dear to my heart. He's my adopted kid! LOL! I want to give him something special, so maybe I will look for a book of saints, or christian heroes, etc. Thanks for the suggestions!

Blessings,
Tammy

You could definitely find all the things I mentioned at a Catholic book store, and I'd guess that if you lived in a large enough city, there is one close to where you live.

If that fails, you could always order it on-line. There are a number of online Catholic book stores and if you ordered it soon, you should be able to have it delivered before his Communion.

:)

PS: Personally, I'd say you couldn't go wrong with a book of the Saints, especially if it's got a lot of pictures in it. But I'm biased, I loved to read as a kid (matter of fact, I have over 500 books in my "library" now... and oddly enough it was the first thing my mother mailed to me once I got married :p ).

Most bible book stores will have a small (or not so small) Catholic section where you can find things like rosary beads. I think they might have a book on saints in their regular book section. If not, I'm sure they can order for you (or you can order online, like nyj said). The Chronicles of Narnia are widely available in all bookstores, even ones like Barnes and Noble, Borders, and Walden. In fact, some of those larger bookstores might even have some books on saints too....

In some families, First Communion is like a birthday party, and the kid gets all KINDS of stuff. A family friend gave their son a bike. I don't approve of that. If people wish to give something to commemorate the occasion, my personal opinion is that it should be faith-related. I made my wishes known when MY children made their First Communions, as well. (I'm such an old grouch of a mother, LOL)

I gave one child a beautiful book which was a photographical portrayal of the Holy Lands. The photos were in black and white, so it wasn't an extremely expensive book. It was titled something like, "Where Jesus Walked." To a small child, Jesus is like a movie star or a TV character, and this book showing places mentioned in the Bible made His life more real.

Peace be with you,
~VOW

If his family has a VCR/DVD you could always get a movie like The Greatest Story Ever Told or Jesus of Nazareth, but that may not go over as well as they're probably more for adults, though I loved those movies when I was younger (and I have The Greatest Story Ever Told on VHS).

I got Eric a prayer book for older elementary kids (7 and up) that prays through the Bible, and I got him a book that reminds me of a small Usborne book called the Kid's Bible Handbook. I think he will like both of them because they have lots of information, and they are bible oriented.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions! I don't shop online, and I don't know what the people in my town who are Catholic do when they want Catholic things, cuz I can't find a shop anywhere closer than an hours drive!

blessings,
Tammy
