  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Well, I'm really interested in marine biology, and am really interested in that kinda stuff. I love looking at stars, observing bugs and other living creatures, love gadgets, and all kinds of stuff. Well, on this webpage it said that it's a good idea to take science, math, psychology, biology, and other stuff, but what concerned me is that you have to study evolution!? It just kinda startled me, does anybody have advice?

What's wrong with studying evolution? Just because people put an atheistic spin to it doesn't mean that studying evolution itself is a sin. In fact, many theists find elegance in their God when they study evolution and many say that they feel closer to their God. It is a very fascinating subject.

The only science which I am very interessted in is Physics. Therefore, I don't know much about how evolution fits in Biology. I am actually very bad in Biology ;) However, I say, if you don't believe in evolution, try to work around it. I don't think high school deals too much with evolution, so your future is looking a bit evolution free. You will encounter evolution though, you can't always skip it.

Although I don't believe in evolution, I don't think that it is necessarily incompatible with Christian faith. However, that aside, I think that even for someone who doesn't believe in evolution, it is a good idea to have a strong understanding of what the theory teaches, if nothing else so that you can form well-educated opinions and arguments against it.

I had to study evolution, but its not a huge component of the Biology course - its only a very very small part! I just groaned when it came on and just did it.. You may not believe its correct, but you shouldnt be worried about it, once you study it, it will be over (nice and fast ;))

Why didn't you like it? Was it because of the theological implications or just evolution itself?

I dont want to debate it :) its ok, i just (personally) found it irritating that they are trying to make us believe that we are just some big cosmic accident - that we were just lucky that one day the amoeba decided to become more complex, and more complex again...
I find it an insult to my intelligence to say that my lineage comes from these unicellular blobs :p lol

Gotcha ;). Natural selection and subjects in evolution that don't deal with the origins of life but rather it's changes are interesting and shouldn't offend you as a Christian, although it's all up to your interpretation.

I think she doesn't have an issue with evolution itself but rather the application of the theory to explain the origin of life.

That's a misinterpretation of evolution, though, because evolution says nothing about the origin of life.

That's what is so frustrating about evolution. It has been stereotyped from what it truly is to where there are many people that won't even give it a chance.

Im not stereotyping - a good portion of what i learnt was human evolution - about how we used to be monkeys. (etc etc). It is very true I also learnt about Natural Selection, but that was mainly in Genetics.

Human evolution also seems to be a turnoff for many people. They close their minds to any type of new idea of that sort and don't want anything to do with it. That's part of the reason why I believe the Intelligent Design movement is as popular as it is-it provides an alternative to those who don't want to accept new ideas about the fundamentals of our existence. BTW, I'm not saying that you're that type of person, Kateena.

Who's trying to make you believe that you're some "big cosmic accident?"
1. People don't "believe" evolution, they accept it as a scientific theory.
2. You're not an accident. Evolution doesn't say that. It just explains how nature works. Whether you want to believe we're accidents or God's special creations is up to you. You can believe either and still accept evolution.
3. Bacteria don't "decide". Mistakes in DNA copying lead to new possible forms.

I find it an insult to my intelligence to say that my lineage comes from these unicellular blobs :p lol
Well...as an embryo you were a unicellular blob. Does that offend you?

1. People don't "believe" evolution, they accept it as a scientific theory.

That's the problem with people's perspective of evolution-they see it as a religion instead of a scientific principle. Of course, www.dictionary.com defines believing as "to accept as true or real", so by that definition if they accept it as a true scientific theory, then they'd believe in it.

2. You're not an accident. Evolution doesn't say that. It just explains how nature works. Whether you want to believe we're accidents or God's special creations is up to you. You can believe either and still accept evolution.

Agreed.

3. Bacteria don't "decide". Mistakes in DNA copying lead to new possible forms.

I assume that whoever put that bacteria "decide" simply used bad wording. If not, then I don't see where they think they have the place to make such claims about evolution.
