To Michelle:
Add me to the list of panic attack sufferers. I lost my marbles about six months after my mother passed away. I was a basket case, and I scared the stuffin' out of my family, my husband especially.
Get help, Michelle. There is no reason on God's green earth why you should NOT. It's a shame that mental illness has such a stigma attached to it. It has been determined that many so-called "mental" problems have PHYSICAL origins. The chemistry in your brain is out of whack. Medication will alleviate that.
Look at it this way. If you had a sinus infection, with fever, pain, and "nasty nose," you'd see your doctor and get a prescription for an antibiotic, wouldn't you? Or if you fell off the porch and busted your leg, you'd go to the hospital and have the bone set and a cast put on it, right? Getting medical help for panic attacks is the same thing.
Panic attacks put your body under such stress. The adrenaline is dumped into your bloodstream, your heart beats hard (I used to feel like my heart was "boiling" in my chest!), your blood pressure shoots up, and every single muscle in your body is tensed, ready to flee.
I will also echo what others have said: the Rosary is a great, great comfort in times of panic. Forcing yourself to concentrate on those beads, saying each prayer, will help to drown out the thoughts that circle endlessly in your mind.
I will certainly keep you in my prayers.
Peace be with you,
