  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am an anxiety and panic attack sufferer.  I have been for years.  I am not on medication for it, I just deal with it as it comes up.  Lately that attacks have been horrible and they have increased in severity and occurances. (usually they come on when I am dealing with something difficult)  Please pray for me ... this is not easy for me to ask or to admit.

Thanks,

Michelle

Michelle -

You are not alone. I, too, suffer from panic and anxiety attacks, I tried just dealing with them but they became so intense that I had to get on meds. I use Zoloft and it helps greatly because its mild. I still have an attack now and then, but it is nowhere near the severity I had to deal with. I could not get out of bed for two days I was so worked up.

Now I may experiece shortness of breath and my heart races for about 5-8 minutes and then it passes. It happens if I am focusing on a lot of stressful things at one time. Just know you are not alone and its treatable.

I am praying for you and hope that you will seek proper medical treatment as well. Please PM or email me if you need to.

Peace.

Wow, this must be common. I have suffered anxiety as well. It mostly hits when I haven't had enough sleep. I've quit smoking for almost five months and started working out and anxiety is easier to handle.

I send my prayers.

PS: would a break from this place ease the stress? Sometimes I just have to forget that apologetics exists.

I have time lined the attacks.  They started when I was 19.  I'll go months without having one sometimes even years.  From what I've determined, they always come on when I'm dealing with something stressful.

I have been spending less time here.  There was one thread I left yesterday simply because I could not maintain a dignified sense of composure.  I was getting angry, so yeah a little less internet time might help. :)

Thanks again for the prayers everyone.

Awwwww, Miss Shelby...

I have panic attacks sometimes. I have a lot of anxiety too. This is especially hard when I walk across campus, sit in class, or go to public, crowded places where I don't know most of the people. When I was younger, I could barely walk across a lunchroom; I was TERRIFIED that people would criticize the way I walked! Can you believe that? I could barely move. And when I sat at the lunch table, I was frozen. It took all that I was just to eat my food without freaking out. And then sometimes I just couldn't help it, and tears would streak down my cheeks, not for sadness, but out of pure fear, terror... I can get really distraught with this stuff. I worry about it sometimes, because I want to be a professor one day. I worry about how I could handle lectures with large groups of students... :sigh:

I know about what you're feeling Miss Shelby. I will pray for you.

Hi, Michelle

I too had panic attacks and currently also take zoloft which does really help.  But being able to stop them yourself once they do start can be done.  Go to the library or bookstore and find the book, "Triumph Over Fear" A Book of Help and Hope for People With Anxiety, Panic Attacks, and Phobias by Jerilyn Ross.  She is the president of the Anxiety Disorders Association of America and a psychologist who treats many people with panic disorder.  You may have heard that Donny Osmond has panic attacks and it almost ruined his career, until he went to Jerilyn Ross who worked with him personally to help him deal with them.  He also recommends this book.  Inside the book, it describes a very simple method of dealing with these attacks when they begin and how to stop them.  It is an extremely easy and very effective method to stop these feelings that are so painful.  It has really worked for me and many other people.

I will pray for you too.

Thanks so much you guys for your prayers and words of encouragement. You have no idea how much it means to me.

Mary I'll look into that book.

For anyone else interested in reading a good book about anxiety...check into The Anxiety Cure by Dr. Archibald Hart. That book helped me immensely a few years ago when the attacks were coming on strong. I like the author because 1. he is a Christian 2. he is a psychiatrist 3. he has suffered with panic/anxiety and depression, 4. he's funny.

It was very educating in the way of how to use certain self talk techniques when a panic attack comes on, and also about different medication used to treat anxiety..amonst other things.

The most comforting  thing to know is that I'm not alone. Thanks to all of you have shared your similar experiences.

To Michelle:

Add me to the list of panic attack sufferers. I lost my marbles about six months after my mother passed away. I was a basket case, and I scared the stuffin' out of my family, my husband especially.

Get help, Michelle. There is no reason on God's green earth why you should NOT. It's a shame that mental illness has such a stigma attached to it. It has been determined that many so-called "mental" problems have PHYSICAL origins. The chemistry in your brain is out of whack. Medication will alleviate that.

Look at it this way. If you had a sinus infection, with fever, pain, and "nasty nose," you'd see your doctor and get a prescription for an antibiotic, wouldn't you? Or if you fell off the porch and busted your leg, you'd go to the hospital and have the bone set and a cast put on it, right? Getting medical help for panic attacks is the same thing.

Panic attacks put your body under such stress. The adrenaline is dumped into your bloodstream, your heart beats hard (I used to feel like my heart was "boiling" in my chest!), your blood pressure shoots up, and every single muscle in your body is tensed, ready to flee.

I will also echo what others have said: the Rosary is a great, great comfort in times of panic. Forcing yourself to concentrate on those beads, saying each prayer, will help to drown out the thoughts that circle endlessly in your mind.

I will certainly keep you in my prayers.

Peace be with you,
~VOW

Michelle, Do find the book I recommended.  Since it is written by a psychologist, she teaches in it the very same method she uses in her practice to counscil people with panic attacks.  And the $5.00 or so it costs sure is a lot cheaper than going to a therapist for the same advice.  I have truly benefited from what I read in that book, and I can now control those panicky feelings myself inwardly whenever they do still come up.

This is off topic, but I have just joined the elite, I was given 3 warnings all in one post, then banned from Rapture Ready.  It is in the breaking news section about the pope and pompeii, though I suspect it may be moved to apolo.  I was accused of saying we must all be part of the Catholic church to be saved (I didn't) sprouting cultic material (the RCC's teachings are a cult?) and for talking about pre-trib outside their pre-trib forum.  I didn't say that much about pre-trib, it was 4 am then where I am, I have seen others do it and not even get called on it.  I didn't even realize I had done that, so it wasn't done deliberately, I was pretty tired then.  I sent a protest to the adm. but I think they just wanted to get rid of me. *SIGH*  Oh, well, I had pretty much decided I was going to stop going there anyway, I just think their treatment of me was pretty unfair.  I guess I am now an official member of the Catholic, "I have been banned from Rapture Ready Club."

VOW, I once asked my doctor whether or not medication would be an option for me. His reply was (seriously)--'Oh, you've had these for so long, I don't really think it's disorder--they're just YOU.' I have been considering going to a different doctor, but I haven't yet. Someone suggested looking into a female physican. I am taking that into consideration. Thanks for your support and your prayers.

Mary, well... what can I say? It was bound to happen eventually. I won't say that I didn't deserve to be banned from Rapture Ready, I did hurl some personal insults around. But if everyone were given the ax for what I did, that place would be a wasteland. It's probably for the best. I think Axion once said that all Catholics should just leave that place and it would eventually self destruct. He's probably right. :)

Thanks again for your prayers, guys and you are all in mine.

To Michelle:

IMHO, your doctor is a jerk. Just because he's been to medical school does not make him the absolute authority on the prescription pad.

Sheesh.

I would think he'd say something like, "You've had these for so long, I bet you're TIRED of feeling like this! Let's see if we can find something to help..."

Health Care is like any consumable. You are in control of the checkbook. If you don't like the care you are getting, vote with your feet and find an new doctor.

Peace be with you,
