• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I need some advice about how I'm dealing with my OCD (at least one of the ways I deal with it).

One things that happens in my mind is that an OCD spike occurs somethings along the lines that if I do this or that, that I'm bargaining away my salvation for that "thing" (whatever that is).

So in order to counter it, I then ask God--"God please let me know if that that thought is real, somehow."

Sometimes I might attach a time to it like, please let me know somehow by 9:00 tonight or something like that.

If nothing distinct happens then I assume it wasn't real.

Is this healthy?

What should I do instead?

Hi Hermit7,

What I notice is that you have already attributed the "if you do this or that you are bargaining away your salvation for this or that thing" thought to an OCD spike in your post; and it does sounds like a classic OCD intrusive thought. There is no need to even ask if the thought is real, because it is obviously looks like it's an OCD generated thought.

Hi flower,

Thanks again for your reply. It truly was a comfort to me.

But overall, when I'm uncertain whether a thought or feeling is OCD or not, would God really mind if I ask HIm to show me?

I know this sounds weird, but how would I know that God will tell me or confirm to me whether a thought was really from Him or from my sickness?

Hi Hermit,

I don't don't know exactly what God is thinking, but knowing He is full of grace and understanding and that you have a neurological disorder that causes you to be unsure in areas like this, it seems like God may not mind if you asked Him. But at the same time; I am realizing part of OCD is obsessing over whether you really mean a thought or not. It's tough, I know; I deal with it. I am not sure how you would know if God was confirming it was from your sickness or not; but also, I believe God has given us the ability to research and understand. I think that learning more about this disorder by reading and talking more with people who have it, can help you start to understand how OCD opperates and see it's patterns and symptoms. This can increase the chances of you knowing whether or not something is from OCD. I know you are asking God to reassure you by signs and stuff; I am not trying to advise you not to pray to God. Prayer is important! At the same time, I think if you research the disorder more you will be able to relax a bit more because you will be able to tell what is OCD better for yourself. In my opinion, I would encourage you to pray to God for things like a good understanding of the disorder as you research it more, better overall clarity in being able to discern what are OCD thoughts, and a calm soul and peace before God as you work through this disorder. God loves you! Rest in that fact.
