I Just Installed Ubuntu on a Flashdrive

Okay, I'm solving the problems one by one, and I'm posting from "Wiley Werewolf, " which is the second-newest Ubuntu distribution. Essentially, Ubuntu fits better on certain computers than on others. A game I like keeps locking up. If I can get the upgrades for Wiley Werewolf, I might be able to upgrade to the newest version of Ubuntu.

Part of my problem is that other than geeking around and playing a few games, Ubuntu has nothing that I need. It goes on the web fine, but so do Windows and Chrome. I can do serious work, but I can do that on other systems. The poorly-equipped Bible programs cannot compare to what Windows has.

I'm actually enjoying learning the system, which has a higher learning curve than Windows 10. I could have done more with it when it was on the flash drive if I had understood the OS better. The more I learn, the more I enjoy Linux, and I might wind up liking it.

There is Bible analyzer it's good as far as I can tell. Now if your using the newest Ubuntu than version 5.0 should work here http://www.bibleanalyzer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=832. I use Version 4.9 because I use elementary OS (which is made from Ubuntu LTS 14.04). I'll include screenshots:

I recommend e-Sword, which is a free Windows program. However, I an going to try to install the ones you fellows recommended.

Topcare, I got it installed without any problems, and it runs well. However, when I try to add modules, Ubuntu rejects them.

I just installed Bible Analyzer and it worked, but it was 4.9. I will try on regular Ubuntu and let you know. What version of BA do you have?

I'm actually enjoying Linux as I get used to the system. But the learning curve is a lot steeper than it is for Chrome.

A lot of it depends on your desktop environment. Some are more similar to Windows than others. Cinnamon, for example, is very similar to Windows, and so many users have an easier time transitioning using that particular DE. Vanilla Ubuntu uses Unity, which I've never tried for myself, but I think most people find it user-friendly enough, albeit with a bit of an adjusting period. I personally prefer Xfce, which is a lightweight DE that shares some similarities to Windows but is far, far more customizable (and therefore not quite as user friendly as some of the others).

It's all a question of whether the user values the idea of a new operating system enough to learn its quirks. Some people like to tinker. Some people want things to just work. Yes, you can find Linux distros that do indeed "just work," but to some, that means everything works exactly the way they're used to, and that just won't happen. You see the same phenomenon whenever a new version of Windows comes out -- many people don't want to upgrade because they're used to what they have and don't want to learn something new.

At any rate, I applaud you for sticking it out and learning your way around Ubuntu.

I have version 5.0.

I loaded up Ubuntu 15.10 in virtualbox and download BA 5 and loaded a module without any problem. The only thing I could suggest is reinstalling BA. Sorry not to be more help

If it weren't for the fact Linux still doesn't support many games, I'd be all over it, regardless the learning curve.

It's a great operating system and I'd guess many don't know they could get along just fine with it...it's all they'd need, and they don't need to be paying for Windows at all.

Yeah, I do know they are getting there. Much better than just a few years ago, and I can only hope the game makers/distributors realize their role in this, or evidently they already have.

Didn't realize it was that many, they must be moving pretty fast. I generally wait a few years before taking another look, but will check it out. Thanks for the tip.

No problem. I'm using e-Sword on Windows 10 when I do Bible research.

I've used e-Sword almost since it came out, and I love it. I literally have thousands of modules for it. I'm using it on Windows 7 right now, but I did run it on Ubuntu for a couple of years quite some time back. Wine back then did the trick in getting e-Sword to work perfectly on Ubuntu. The same might be true today.

I'm a 100% Linux user, I have Xubuntu 16.04 on my laptop. Xiphos is a native Linux Bible study software and I dig it. It's not Logos, but it gets the job done for me.

I use the Google office suite for everything. I plug my laptop into the TV in my classroom and use Google Sides when I teach, but I export to .PPT when I preach. The computer we use for media is a Windows machine with no internet access.

Can you install Ubuntu on a Windows machine fairly easily if you buy a Ubuntu distribution DVD? I'm thinking about running Linux and Windows on the same machine. I read somewhere that you can use a dual boot and boot either into Windows or Linux. Does this sound right?

Its easier if you have Windows 7. But, yes. I dislike dual-booting.

I do have Windows 7, and things are running very smoothly right now. I'd hate to mess things up.
