• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

As you can see Im new to the boards. My name is James, I been a christian all my life. However I smoke Cannibus because of all the stress in my life (believe me Im under alot of stress) Is that against the Law of God? I have read the commandments over and over to see if what I was doing is wrong or not.

A friend of mine introduced me to it, and I only do it to relax. I dont want to do it if it is wrong.

If it says in the Bible that is against Gods word please let me know where I can find it in the Bible.

Thank all of you.

First off you need to be careful, cannabis is psychologically addictive, that is you become addicted to the effects of it like the stress relief. A friend of my sisters is unable to sleep unless he's had a spliff.

Looking through the bible for a reason to continue to smoke the stuff is a cop out, you need to obey the laws of your country, and unless you're from the Netherlands its illegal to smoke cannabis for anything other then medical reasons.

I honestly didnt even think on legal terms! I do remember the Bible saying a few times to obey the laws of the land. Thank you.

You are self-medicating. My husband did this for 19 years. He was recently diagnosed as bipolar. You need to see an MD because there is an underlying reason why you are unable to handle daily stress without indulging yourself in this. Please seek help. You probably think that you are not hurting anyone except yourself, but I promise you, that even if that is the case, you are hurting yourself a great deal. Marijuana is addictive regardless of what our health teachers taught us in 8th grade. It also leads to other drugs. This is not a textbook talking to you. This is someone who has stood by and watched the person she loved the most self-destruct. My husband has had two heart attacks and he is only 41. I raised the kids alone even though he was here in the same house, and now, I will probably not enjoy grandkids with him. This is the reality of what you are doing to yourself. I am telling you this to help you. Please get help before you hurt yourself and those that love you and it is too late to do anything about it.

Is it really all that relaxing? Even before I found my faith I knew that smoking pot was wrong. I knew it was wrong on some other level than legality. It was a gut feeling. This produced paranoia. Even though the chance of my being caught was small. The penalty for having less than an ounce was a fine. Don't know how much. However I was still afraid. So in my case there was scripture in proverbs. The evil man runs when no one pursues him. Does pot cause paranoia in you?

The source of all stress is, utimately, the devil. But before we go to those deeps I think a frienly chat with a real friend could help. Then if you need another kind of help go for it, k? :)

Don't feel more guilty than it's necesary, guilt is like pain, it just helps you know there's something wrong but beyond that it servers no purpose. If you feel you have sinned asked God for forgiveness, find some direction, get help because we always need help of one sort or another and MOVE ON! :)

If you were catholic I'd tell you to go to confession, if you are not go to your pastor if you trust him or her well. OK?

I am praying for you.

I agree with Lisa, you are self-medicating. Get counsel to find the underlying problem. And, always remember God loves you just the way you are. You are not your behavior, you are a blessed child of God. I am praying that God will guide you to the right people to help you.

Always looking in the Bible for what is right and wrong is not the best way to go. You are asking if it is wrong which means you know you are doing something that is most likely harmful to yourself or others. Substance abuse can be a quick fix to a problem but it always causes more harm in the long run.

Have you tried meditation or contemplative prayer for relaxation? It might help much more than your current form of relaxation.

Only when I do too much, now I only do just enough to calm my nerves a little. I do have that gut feeling that it is wrong.

I spent my entire adult life an alchoholic and drug addict. I never looked at it that way though. It was just a way to take the edge off, a form of relaxation. Now that I'm clean, I realise that my former attitude was pure folly. A lot of the stress that I felt came directly from the cure. So, did my conversion produce an immediate cessation of drug use and drinking? No, it did not. But I was all the more convicted about it, until finally I was willing to stop both drugs and booze. It was then that I asked God from my heart, to take away my desire for these. God answered my prayer and granted my freedom. This is repentance and salvation. God has granted me over 2 years of freedom! These victories are what we draw from to gain our faith. They are of great value, not just because we are now clean, but because, we have reason to believe we can overcome other obsticals through our faith. I will pray for you.

if your nerves are bad all the time and you (after being off of cannabis for a while) find that it is constant throughout the day or extreme...you may have General or situational anxiety disorder....and you may want to get those checked out too.

James,

I am sure many people have a highly stressful lifestyle (I still do somewhat) recently I had a very high pressure job that sometimes kept me in the office up to 100 hours a week, medical difficulties in family with one of our children that is special needs and other medical issues that hurt us finacially as well. I agree with thos who urged you to discover the underlying issues.

My personal issues began to influence the way I reacted or responded to situations. I held onto years of painful traumas and I began to use alcohol, cocaine and prescription drugs to deal with my stress. In time it catches up with you and soon it begins to dominate your life. I had never started confronting and dealing with a childhood of physical and sexual abuse and I failed to become in touch with the pain and trauma that was caused from those years. Today I understand how I used different things to self medicate and keep myself from feeling the burdens and stress. All of this began to manifest years later and I became more closed off and hard hearted over time (not good for someone with a 20 year marriage and 4 children to provide for and who was also actively involved in ministry).

I advise you to seek Godly counsel and prayerfully look at what the stress causes you to feel and start identifying those feelings and I really encourage you to get some counseling to help you deal with things in a different manner.
