  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The answer is there is no answer. My wife says, on the way out the door to her sisters for the weekend; Why don't you just get over it? :sigh: Gee honey because I have to go "cemeterying" his weekend and for one weekend out of the year relive the hell again. I see the smiley faces of everyone going fishing, to BBQs, Picnics, etc. and I'm revisiting all of my friends that I loved like brothers that are now living in the Mansions of the Lord. There is nothing more depressing. I can't wait to go back to work next week. Just stay busy through the weekend and all is good. Here's an idea let’s merge Memorial Day with Veterans Day so we don’t have to go through this twice a year.

God has been so good to me and he will see me through as always. Just a little rant.

RLTW

Its ok to rant. May God bless you.

M21,

You've been blessed with the gift of empathy, which is a two edged sword. While I understand your sadness, this only means you are a sensitive person and no doubt feel the great joys as well.

Your post makes me remember back in 1998, when I was with a friend and his father driving up the SF peninsula. I commented on the Golden Gate Cemetery...row after row of white crosses, and it made me wonder, and it still does.

My friend's father said I was too young to be thinking of those things, but I still remember the row after row of white crosses and the sadness I felt. At any rate, I hope you will find some peace and happiness this Memorial Day weekend.

According to the US National Calendar of Events Definations;

Veterans day is celebrate & show apperciation for those who are still here

Memorial day is for those we have lost

I guess you could combine but I think there is a time for everything. Maybe if you think of that way, you arent killing yourself twice a year.

Actually it used to be called decoration day and it was for all dead to be rememberd and not just servicemen. I think Veterans day should be used to honor the war dead as well as all vets.

That is my understanding of Memorial Day...IMO, it is more for those that gave their lives for freedom than it is for veterans.

MEMORIAL DAY 2005

In 1776 the United States of America was born

Long ago on that bright July fourth morn
The Revolutionary War was being fought
It was freedom and liberty of forefathers sought

Many lives were lost in that great fight
Liberty was won and America became a light
That drew others to freedom on her shore
They came from England, Ireland, France and more

The civil war tore asunder our bountiful land
Brother fought brother, often hand to hand
Finally this war ended and our nation began to heal
The rifles, cannon and artillery were quiet and still

In the Indian wars and the Spanish-American conflict
Many were killed, some by a gun some by a stick
World War I and World War II came to pass
Millions were killed, some in mass

Korea and Vietnam saw our nation at war again
When will all the conflicts and wars end
Desert Storm put our troops to the test
Victory was won and proved our troops were the best

Today the War on Terror is still going strong
Please pray for our troops all the day long
Many of our troops lie silent in the grave
They gave all for America, the home of the brave

I would like to thank the many women and men
Who gave their lives for our freedom, can I get an amen
We can worship the Lord in the good old US of A
I salute all our fallen heroes on this Memorial day

Memorial Day was for the US Civil War, and eventually previous wars, too.

Veterans Day came from WW I.

Memorial Day:
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" (Source: Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920). While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.
Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.

Veteran's Day
World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919 , in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles , France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918 , is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11 a.m.
