Are you using Windows XP? If so, that's why. XP was end of life in April 2014 (more than two years ago), so it is a general recommendation to upgrade to Windows 7 at the very minimum.

Basically that means you can keep using Chrome, but it won't update - making yourself open to a lot of security vulnerabilities that get fixed up in later versions.

Also Vista end of life is April next year.

Chrome is dropping most or all 32 bit versions. You probably have 32bit Vista, and it might be as simple as that. If you like Chrome, I would suggest you try Slimjet, which is related but better. And since it is built on Chromium, it will retain 32 bit support.

Eventually it will affect things. Gmail will complain and may refuse the connection. Ditto, youtube. As Wooklee says, the browser will in general become increasingly unsafe. Since the browser is such a major part of what most people do, I strongly suggest you move to Slimjet. You can sync your bookmarks and extensions over seamlessly.

While SlimJet may still keep being supported, I would strongly suggest replacing the computer (or buying a new copy of Windows) as soon as you can if you're still using Vista. While it is expensive, and you will have to get used to the newer versions (10 being the latest), it's becoming increasingly less secure to use Vista (it's likely your antivirus is not far off not supporting it, too).

i'm considering buying a computer that uses Linux.

Although, as you say, it may be a bit expensive.

Thanks.

I feel that Vista and XP are still fine to use with an up to date browser and a good anti-malware. I've had great results with Panda Free. I've put out several Vista units lately that ran beautifully.

That said, if you want a new unit, fine, but if not, converting the existing to Linux is another very viable option. I've converted several, and every one has been a success. In fact, my own unit, which I'm on now, is a Vista machine, upgraded to Win7, and now converted to Linux for the past half year. I don't plan on going back to Windows, especially with the turn MS has taken. There's no need to. And it's all free. The version of Linux I use, Linux Lite, runs faster than Windows, so older hardware gets a new lease on life. There is some user adaptation that must take place, but LL keeps it to a minimum.
