  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

...and I know that that's a poisonous way of thinking, but seeing as I'm converting to Christianity after being a long-time Atheist, I don't know how to stop thinking that way. Any suggestions? I really want to commit to Christ, but even as I'm typing this, I feel guilty for going against my Atheistic tendencies. I really want some help here, so any suggestions would be great. Thanks. :)

Sweet Shalom Hannah,

It is wonderful that you are now in an eternal relationship with Christ! He certainly knows all about you...read Psalm 139...so continue heartily seeking Him to get to know all about Him! :D Recognize that meaningful relationships take much time spent together to build. The stronger your relationship is with your Lord, the deeper your faith will be and the more you will believe that He exists even whether or not you feel Him. Feelings are absolutely fickle and not at all trustworthy indicators of the Truth!

Say you had a bf yet he was at his home and you at yours, so just because you couldn't actually physically see your bf...this doesn't mean that he doesn't exist. ;)

As for feeling guilty about going against atheism...that would be the devil scheming to deceive you back into his clutches! Be wise and flee to Jesus whom loves you muchly! He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life! He is the Way that will lead YOU to the True High Life!

Thanks, you guys.

Humblebee--I didn't realize before that I'm just beginning my relationship with Him, so of course it's going to be a rocky start. Thanks for reminding me of that.

Millerrod--I'll check that thread out. Thanks for recommending it to me.

God bless you both, and thanks again for responding. :)

God loves you, and I think early on your going to have those doubitng moments. You just gotta remember the important things about Christ,
like the fact that he died for you, that he loves you, and is so thrilled you've come back to him and his Father.

Those help me when I feel doubtful.

Love in Christ,

Kyle

When I was a young teenager, I used to question God's existence. When I became saved, I believed in God's existence, but I began wondering where He came from. Then I read a verse in the Bible (Isaiah 55:8) that really explained alot to me. The Lord says "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways..." I then realized that God thinks in a totally different manner than what people do. His thinking capacity is far greater than ours. Therefore, I don't believe people have the thinking capacity to analyze God's existence (like where He came from or how He got here). This is where our faith comes in. We must believe that He does exist.

It is truly hard, its something we shake off. I did it a lot when I first was saved. A hindering thought - I spent a lot of time reading Gods word. The more I read and the more I seen that we could see things happening just as the Bible said, those thoughts went away, they do pop up when we least expect it. Ive always believed in God, as early as I can remember, but I was not a born-again Christian, but even after salvation, those little thoughts popped up. Why? i dont know, it wasnt something I was thinking, it was just nagging on me.
your mind is satans play ground, he likes to put those doubts in your head, shake them off and move forward . I find a lot of comfort in 1, 2 and 3rd John..

Praying to God and seeing His answers is the main way I know He exists. There have been many times where I have called on Him and He was there for me. This goes from every day "little things" (like this one time where He picked up the plumber bill  ) to the time when I asked Him that if He does exist and if the Bible is true then please bring me to faith in Him (I had tried to believe the Good News many times and just couldn't overcome my doubts).

Definitely start a prayer life. He will show you Himself through it. Combine this with Scripture, so you'll know how to interpret prayer "answers" and know if they are true. Learn about His character.

I cant agree more with the posts about delving into God's word and praying about it. You will start to build a relationship with the Lord as you read his words, and how his grace flows throughout the bible. I use a Life Journal, that allows me to read a passage of scripture per day, then right a small blurb on its meaning, then a small blurb on my reflection on it, then lastly, a small prayer to the Lord about that scripture. It sounds like alot, but it only takes 15 minutes a day. Once you learn more about it, you can proclaim a fast in your life, whether that is fasting of actual food, or something simple like tv or spending entertainment money for a week or something like that. When fasting something, anything, your sensitivity to God and his word and prayer thrives. At first, this all feels very weird, because it is "new" to you, being a new Christian. But, once youve done these things a couple times, the relationship starts, and you begin to "feel" his presence. Then, he begins to show you things you never thought you would be shown.....I encourage you to keep stepping out in faith, take risks for Him, and He will bless you!!!

I was the same way when I first came to Christ. My faith became solidified when I read about the Apostles and the persecution they endured for their love of Christ. My faith started growing even stronger when I started attending a Bible Study group. Bible Study is so very important in developing and strengthening your faith

In the meantime, I am inserting the following for you to read. You will see how much love the Apostles had for Jesus.

Does the Bible record the death of the apostles? How did each of the apostles die?

Question: "Does the Bible record the death of the apostles? How did each of the apostles die?"

Answer: The only apostle’s death the Bible records is James (Acts 12:2). The most commonly accepted church tradition in regards to the death of an apostle is that the Apostle Peter was crucified, in fulfillment of Jesus’ prophecy to Peter (John 21:18). There are traditions for the other apostles as well, but we have no way of verifying if they are accurate. Following are the most popular “traditions” in regards to the deaths of the apostles.

Matthew suffered martyrdom in Ethiopia, killed by a sword wound. John faced martyrdom when he was boiled in a huge basin of boiling oil during a wave of persecution in Rome. However, he was miraculously delivered from death. John was then sentenced to the mines on the prison island of Patmos. He wrote his prophetic Book of Revelation on Patmos. The apostle John was later freed and returned to serve as Bishop of Edessa in modern Turkey. He died as an old man, the only apostle to die peacefully. Peter was crucified upside down on an x-shaped cross, according to church tradition because he told his tormentors that he felt unworthy to die in the same way that Jesus Christ had died.

James the Just (the brother of Jesus, not officially an apostle), the leader of the church in Jerusalem, was thrown over a hundred feet down from the southeast pinnacle of the Temple when he refused to deny his faith in Christ. When they discovered that he survived the fall, his enemies beat James to death with a fuller's club. This was the same pinnacle where Satan had taken Jesus during the temptation. James the Greater, a son of Zebedee, was a fisherman by trade when Jesus called him to a lifetime of ministry. As a strong leader of the church, James was ultimately beheaded at Jerusalem. The Roman officer who guarded James watched amazed as James defended his faith at his trial. Later, the officer walked beside James to the place of execution. Overcome by conviction, he declared his new faith to the judge and knelt beside James to accept beheading as a Christian.

Bartholomew, also know as Nathanael, was a missionary to Asia. He witnessed to our Lord in present-day Turkey. Bartholomew was martyred for his preaching in Armenia when he was flayed to death by a whip. Andrew was crucified on an x-shaped cross in Patras, Greece. After being whipped severely by seven soldiers, they tied his body to the cross with cords to prolong his agony. His followers reported that, when he was led toward the cross, Andrew saluted it in these words: "I have long desired and expected this happy hour. The cross has been consecrated by the body of Christ hanging on it." He continued to preach to his tormentors for two days until he expired. The apostle Thomas was stabbed with a spear in India during one of his missionary trips to establish the church in the subcontinent. Matthias, the apostle chosen to replace the traitor Judas Iscariot, was stoned and then beheaded. The apostle Paul was tortured and then beheaded by the evil Emperor Nero at Rome in A.D. 67.

this is one of my favorite verses in scripture, as it brings the point home that figuring it all out is not in the cards for us. the greatness of God puts Him on a plane that we can never hope to attain. for that reason, though, it often seems so removed from us that we can't feel it or touch it. but this verse allows me to believe without having to understand the minutiae of it.
i think wrestling with your faith is a very good sign of taking it seriously. blind faith is just that. it is unexamined and often unsympathetic to inquiry. doubt comes about because you actually spend time thinking about your relationship with Christ, searching for authenticity in your walk with God. if you do this, doubt will dog your walk always, but will spur you on toward an uncompromising experience of faith.
take heart. some of the giants of the faith have wrestled with these same issues. augustine had a titanic battle with his thrilling in the pleasures of the flesh vs. his call to the Lord.
Christ has a precedent for having pity on those who are trying hard to make their belief real. Mark 9:24 is the climax of a story of a man who comes to Christ in a desperate attempt to save his child from the horrible convulsions that torment him. He wants to believe so badly, that finally he shouts out "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!", and Jesus accepts this rather anemic profession of faith and heals the boy.
treasure your times of trial with your faith. they are the fires that will temper your resolve, and they are the challenges that will keep you close to God as you consider the truth you pursue.
