• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi!

I just drank a bottle in wine in less than an hr while talking to my friends--That's a bad thing, right? With that said, I do not think I'm an alcoholic (<--of course. Lol.) but I L-O-V-E wine. Not just any wine, sweet wine! Is that bad? I feel like I can half-way fill up my wine goblet, twice, and not think anything about it... But, when I think about it, two wine goblets = 1 750 mLbottle of wine. *gasp* That can't be good...

Most people say I am overreacting but my gut tells me differently; although I try to ignore it...

Anyway, what do you guys think? Can Two goblets of sweet wine (although it equals a bottle) really be that bad? I normally enjoy my sweet wine every other Friday and couple it with a nice, relaxing bubble bath. Who can give that up...forever? I'm sad just thinking about it....

With that said, I feel like God/the Holy Spirit doesn't want me to drink...AT ALL... but I don't think I can never, ever, ever drink sweet wine for the rest of my life. I don't like alcohol, I don't like dry wine, etc...I only like dessert wines.

Does that make me a bad Christian? :( I don't see myself EVER being a 100% non-drinker. Sweet wine is just too fabulous! Who made/invented that ish? The devil? Grrr.

Anyway, when I think about drinking wine once/wk, it doesn't sound bad...but I feel bad...and I can't shake the feeling. Why would God/the Holy Spirit make me feel bad about drinking wine? It's only wine...

If you think you have a problem with wine, you probably do. You experience guilt after drinking. Normal people don't have a problem drinking at all. People with a problem experience guilt. Normal people don't drink a bottle of wine in an hour. People with a drinking problem do.

I suggest you check out some Alcoholics Anonymous literture and meetings. www.aa.org is a great resource to learn about alcoholism and recovery.

Scripture says that if we love the Lord, we will obey Him. Scripture says we should put the Lord before other idols. The way you describe your love for wine sounds like an obsession, and it could be an idol in your life.

I hope this makes sense.

Hhhmmm...after re-reading my post and reading your message, it seems like wine is definitely an idol of mine. What the heck!? That's crazy!!! How did that happen? I think I mentioned "sweet wine" like 45 times...

I've given up most liquor but sweet wine seems to keep me coming back for me. I can't like, I love it. It tastes soooo good. I mean, I know I'm not the only one who loves sweet wine???

With that said, it's only once every other week or once per week; clearly, tha it doesn't sound like a bad thing. Ugh!

I only drank when my husband went away. Yet, I identified with the feelings that the alcoholics. Try attending a few AA meetings and see if you identify with the feelings shared by the people who share there. Try reading the Big Book, Alcoholics Anonymous, which is available at the AA website, and see if you can learn about alcoholism.

My response will be like others here:

If you have to ask...you're probably an alcoholic...I say that, ever so, lightly:)
But, amongst us ALCH-ies...it is a general rule.

I (being sober six years +) sometimes would just love the taste of a winecooler.

It could be partly, that you genuinely think it's yummy...but that's dangerous if you're drinking so much, so quickly for it's yumminess. :)

Maybe find another beverage to CHUG down as you sip some wine in between...if that isn't an option...THEN you really have to consider: There are many variations of alcoholism. Some people just can't stop when they start (but drink rarely), Some have to always drink and so on...

Seriously, if your asking, you probably have more reason TO BE...

BLESSINGS, DVNA :)

Yes...it's only because it's really yummy/sweet. I don't like liquor or other types of wine. Even if it's free, I won't drink it because I don't like the way it tastes. But when it comes to dessert wines, it's easy to drink and, of course, it tastes really good.

You're right--Maybe I should drink a glass of water in between wine if I continue to drink it. With that said, I've always been a "fast" drinker. Even when I'm at a restaurant and I'm drinking water (my usual daily, beverage of choice), the servers normally have to re-fill my glass 3-4 times within the hour or so. Uh...that's ok if it's water, but bad news if it' a sweet wine.

I will lay off the wine for a while. I've been praying for God to use me as He sees fit so if He doesn't want me to drink wine, I guess that means I need to give it up.

Thanks for the responses!

My gut tells me that there is a problem in the making here. There may not be alcoholism yet but you don't want it to get that far. Everyone here will tell you it's an awful battle to get out once you're there.

Believe me it isn't worth the yummy taste if it destroys your life.

I'd say God is giving you alarm bells to save you from potential danger.

Of course I could also be very wrong. I'm not in your shoes and I certainly don't pretend to know God's will.

I take the advice given by the other posters here.

Take care of yourself...

That definitely doesn't make you an alcoholic, but its good that you are concerned as its not a trap you want your life to fall into. You probably just got a little scared and shocked that you drank that much when you weren't even thinking about it.

Thats the problem with sweet wines and fruity alcoholic drinks; because they're sweet, its very easy to accidentally drink too much without meaning to, especially when you're with friends and busy talking. So set a limit. One glass. And when you're done, learn to say no thanks and get some water.

Hi Sports Junkie, Angel Wings and Everyone...

I could see where it is easy to drink alot of something yummy and cold...MORESO as it gets gotter. Sometimes in summer I even crave a beer in extreme heat..but that's about as quenching as lemonade...just dehydrates you.

So, you may have just not realized the potency of the PUNCH you were drinking =D.

BUT, sounds like you do have something tugging at your heartstring.

Maybe God doesn't want you given to drunkeness, accidental or otherwise.
