• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

It's been a while since I've posted anything new here. I'm really struggling with the SI right now. I don't know why but night time just is really triggering to me. Please I just could use some support right now. I feel awful. I don't like who I am because of the depression.

For me, night time is the hardest because it's more difficult to find someone to talk to for support or a distraction. When I am going through a low phase (I have battled mild depression since I was a teen), I find that I struggle with insomnia and feel the lowest in the late night/early morning hours.

I'm sorry you're struggling so much right now. Have you tried using an online helpline to chat with someone trained to help you get through crisis moments? I know you've said you can't use the phone, so that might be a good option for you. :prayer:

You have my support, my prayers, and you're not alone in this struggle. I know with depression, the night hours can be killer. For me, the best way I can cope when it gets unmanageable is by sleeping it off. If you have trouble sleeping, you might want to try looking into melatonin. Insomniacs (or people who temporarily struggle with insomnia) don't produce enough melatonin naturally. So by taking melatonin supplements, (sold at most whole food-sy stores,) you can sleep better throughout the night.

If sleeping it off doesn't work, (or if you're like me and you can't persuade yourself to get into bed,) I find posting here or e-mailing a friend helps. I also found Cornell University has done a lot of research on self-injury. The research team came up with a list of comprehensive coping strategies for people who are triggered, and I found them more helpful than other lists I've read in the past. You can find them Here: crpsib[dot]com/userfiles/File/Coping-Alt%20Strat-REV-ENGLISH[dot]pdf

Ditto to that. Night time is always hard for me, because there's nothing more vulnerable feeling(to me) than sleeping and being alone at night.

I hope you get to feeling better. I know it hurts now, but just remember that things WILL get better! Keep your chin up!

Night time is bad, sweetie... remember that there are people here in a lot of different time zones, so you may be able to find someone to talk to even if it's night where you are.

And... you are still you, sweetie... the depression doesn't make you someone else, or change your 'self'. It messes with our emotions, it can change how we react and behave... but you are the same person, and you will be happy again one day. Just keep taking little steps, don't give up, and don't expect to get there straight away... accept the bad days, be grateful for the good ones, and never give up.

If you want to take alternative types of supplements please see your doctor first. They like any medication can have side effects or may not mix with other medicines so it is important to ask your doctor.

I'm sorry you are struggling so. Have you thought of starting some kind of new interest for when you feel that way? Like maybe reading books or something you enjoy? All the best to you.

I battle with insomnia, and I was on the melatonin for a while, but it wasn't helping. It would get me to sleep but then I would wake up again after only a few hours. So I am now on a different sleep aid.

flnativegirl-I did try an online chat, but everytime I have gone on there it has been busy and it says to come back later.

Tundras- Thank you for your prayers and support. I will check out that site with coping strategies.

I think nighttime is the hardest for me because I am alone. Completely alone. I'm vulnerable, and thoughts tend to catch up with me.

Solus Christus-Thanks for the encouragement, it is hard right now.

Criada-I may still be me but the depression has changed so much in me. I don't feel the same, I don't act the same. I just don't feel like me. I won't give up and I know it's going to take time. Thanks for the hugs.

Ruth- I am currently trying out painting, and it has helped some.

Doing artwork is so enjoyable for me and is such a freeing feeling I think. I'm glad that painting is helping you some. I hope that you will feel much better soon. Peace and Love to you.

Have you tried using white noise or soundscapes to help you sleep? I used to try reading when I would get insomnia and then I would end up being awake even longer b/c I got involved in the book and didn't want to put it down. I found that a CD that plays waves crashing or rain falling helps soothe me and get me to sleep.

There are lots of relaxation techniques that help with insomnia.

Music does help me. I have a bunch of relaxing sounds that I use. I just haven't been sleeping well this week because I've had a lot on my mind and there has been a lot of stress this week.

I understand that! When I can't quiet my mind to relax enough to sleep, I usually try to imagine that my mind is a giant blackboard, so all I see/focus on is blackness. As soon as my mind starts to drift and think about something I "erase" it mentally and then visualize the blank blackboard again. I sometimes have to "erase" a lot before I drift of to sleep - and sometimes it doesn't work at all.

Give it a try and see if it helps. :)

On reading something before bed: I used to read my bible every night(a chapter or two, in order to get through it in a year sort of thing), and that always seemed to help put me to sleep, even if I wasn't tired. That was before I started SI, but it might still hold true. Nothing better than the word of God to help you through the tough times.

Sometimes nothing works to clear my mind. I'll give that a try though and see if it helps. Sometimes the Bible can be very frustrating to me. I think keeping certain verses on hand might help and I'll give that a try, but there are just some verses that don't help in a time like that.

Talk to your doctor please ...asap! Call your friends, family, come online there are plenty of us willing to listen, read a book, watch tv. I find a little comfort in having something on when I get real down.
