I cannot believe this is the response. The man dead at police hands doesn't even deserve to be called a victim, he is still called a "victim".

I cannot believe that these actions could, IN ANY WAY, be excusable.

Yeah. An execution of shoving a gun in a mouth and pulling the trigger is likely in the policy manual for police work.
I can not believe that some people draw conclusions without know any of the facts other than an obvious one side report, come on now, lets at least make an informed decision.

Entirely false or covered up?

Entirely false....though I guess I'd make an exception for Ahmad Aubery. That one seems more covered up.

Jacob Blake is an easy example. Early claims were that he was murdered while trying to resolve a fight at his baby mammas apartment. Then it turned out he was shot in the back by police while trying to leave the scene of an argument he basically started.

Then the final version, was that after he had violated a restraint order, he attempted to abduct his own daughter, and reached for a knife under his car seat after previous non-lethal attempts to stop him failed....and was shot by a cop.

That's pretty far from early versions of the story. Sadly....people are idiots....so they went out and rioted over this "injustice" anyway.

Since people have literally been killed because dumb people prefer to spread outrage long before they have all the facts....I've decided to now wait till the facts come out.

Do you have any clue of what the results would be of having a gun discharged in the mouth? That is part of what makes this story questionable at best.

Depends upon a lot of things...but generally I'd expect a large portion of the lower face to be missing. It's a lot of force coming from that close to the end of barrel and soft tissue damage would be extensive.

Now that I inform you that multiple deputies have been fired by the Sheriff for their conduct in this incident, what conclusions are you now justified in drawing?

Mississippi deputies tortured Black men, shot one in mouth, lawsuit says

Six sheriff’s deputies responding to a report of drug activity at a Mississippi home in January deactivated their body cameras before forcibly entering the house — despite not having a search warrant, a lawsuit alleges.

Multiple deputies fired after 2 Black men file lawsuit alleging torture and attempted sexual assault in Mississippi

The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office in Mississippi has fired multiple deputies after two Black men filed a federal civil rights lawsuit alleging six White deputies entered their private residence illegally and tortured them for nearly two hours.

“Due to recent developments, including findings during our internal investigation, those deputies that were still employed by this department have all been terminated,” Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey said during a news conference Tuesday, without specifying the number of deputies fired or their names. The deputies had been on administrative leave, the sheriff said, and he declined to comment on specific allegations.

My conclusion is that the investigation is not complete but the Sheriff feels there is sufficient reason to terminate the officers

It could be that there is political pressure being applied and if it was truly up to the sheriff, maybe they’d be on paid administrative leave, or in the office.
We could speculate all night but I’m willing to see how the story develops.

That night, the officer reached out to a group of officers who called themselves "The Goon Squad" and asked if they were "available for a mission," according to the complaint. The group used the name "because of their willingness to use excessive force and not to report it," the complaint said.

An Associated Press investigation in March found several deputies involved with the episode also were linked to at least four violent encounters with Black men since 2019 that left two dead and another with lasting injuries. Deputies accepted to the sheriff’s office's Special Response Team – a tactical unit whose members receive advanced training – were involved in each of the four encounters.

The federal indictment is the culmination of six months of investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Mississippi, the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department, the FBI, the state of Mississippi, and the Mississippi attorney general’s office, he said.

First of 6 Mississippi ex-officers sentenced to 20 years for torturing 2 Black men: ‘I’m so sorry … I hate myself for it’

Hunter Elward, a former Mississippi sheriff’s deputy who faced the most serious of federal charges against him and five other officers in the torture of two Black men last year, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in a highly emotional hearing Tuesday.

He pleaded guilty in August to federal charges of discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence, conspiracy against rights, deprivation of rights under color of law, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and obstruction of justice related to the January 2023 incident.

“I’m so sorry,” the disgraced former officer said [to the victims]. “I don’t want to get too personal with you, Michael. There’s no telling what you’ve seen. I’m so sorry that I caused that. I hate myself for it. I hate that I gave you that. I accept all responsibility.”

Jenkins nodded. Parker stood up and replied: “We forgive you, man.”

McAlpin, Middleton, Dedmon, Opdyke and Hartfield each face up to 20 years in prison [and will be sentenced through the week].

Policing in the US AVERAGES just under 900 hours of training.

In my province, a hair stylist needs 1450hrs of internship AND 10 weeks class instruction.

I don't understand why ALL Americans aren't upset by that.

White Rankin Deputies ‘Tortured’ Handcuffed Black Men, Shot One, Lawyers Allege

no warrant.
6 police officers.
Torture techniques.
Botched execution.

What are your thoughts folks? Is this police work? And if it was not police work, what is it?

It does look like a good article. If this is accurate it's truly horrifying.

I am happy to see that it was the sheriff's department who called the authorities and asked for a full investigation of the incident.

So let's be patient. It sounds like justice will be served.

Have you ever listened to Roland Frye?

He's done excellent research on this topic.

The only research I've seen from that guy is about police shootings and how there is no racial bias in that. It's not related at ALL to my conversation around police training.

Do you have a specific link to his work on training?

Another former deputy, Opdyke, was sentenced to more than 17 years in prison earlier Wednesday.

Two former Rankin County sheriff’s deputies, Elward and Middleton, were sentenced on Tuesday. Elward, who shot Michael Jenkins in the mouth, was sentenced to 20 years in prison and gave an emotional apology to the victims in court. Middleton was sentenced to 17 1/2 years in prison.

Joshua Hartfield, the last of six White former Mississippi law enforcement officers sentenced in the torture of two Black men in January 2023, received a 10-year prison term in federal court Thursday afternoon.

the highest-ranking officer on the scene – Brett McAlpin – was sentenced to more than 27 years in prison earlier Thursday.

[Dedmon got 40 years]

My connection to his work is that he believes there is a racial bias connection to low level police violence because black Americans do experience more of that, it just doesn't reach all the way to police involved shootings.

(The truth was politically inconvenient at the time so he got cancelled, but he's back now, and has done some lengthy interviews since he's been back at Harvard)

He has said various things about what he believes would be helpful in this area where concerns policing.

But those talks are more what he thinks faced with the all data as a black man, not the data itself since that was published a few years ago now.

He cusses too much so I can't share anything... But it's worth looking into on your own. His thoughts are something I think is valuable to the (national) conversation as a whole.

Thanks for this information.
But I'm not really interested in his viewpoint in regards to potential racism in shooting.

I am interested in the abysmal state of police training in the USA and how it is impacting the experience of citizens in the US; regardless of skin colour because a crappy cop is crappy to everyone. A racist crappy cop is crappy to black people. BOTH should be deal with and better training should help both.

It also doesn't help when racist cops get booted of one force and then accepted on another. How fired cops can get jobs in other jurisdictions is also a laughable state of affairs. Well, it would be if it wasn't so tragically messed up.

In addition to the federal sentences upthread...

Mississippi's "Goon Squad" sentenced

Two of the officers — Brett McAlpin and Jeffrey Middleton — were sentenced to 20 years. Christian Dedmon was sentenced to 25 years. Hunter Elward was sentenced to 45 years. Daniel Opdyke was sentenced to 20 years. Joshua Hartfield was sentenced to 15 years. All of their state sentences are to run concurrently withtheir federal sentences.

Ready to "weigh in" yet?

Sure...since you asked so nicely.

I'll start by stating that I didn't quite believe the initial story, as it was rather extreme, and didn't make much sense.

Obviously, from what I've learned from the sentencing....if anything....the media has downplayed not just the horrific nature of this incident but the reputation of the sheriff's office themselves. I tried to find out more about the "goon squad" and its been difficult beyond the details of this particular case.

I did find a NYT investigation that probably has more but is paywalled. I also found a local reporter providing some background....

I'm glad the reign of terror these "men" inflicted upon the community has stopped....but unless this is a massive department (and that seems unlikely) I believe not only should the sheriff resign....I think it's unlikely he hasn't helped clean up after the crimes of these men before and should be investigated. Likewise, I think it's likely that at least a judge and prosecutor are involved with these idiots as well. Apparently, they've been using these sadistic methods on citizens for a couple of decades at least.....and that's hard to do without someone more powerful than the sheriff having your back. I think that previous arrests and convictions should be looked at hard, and likely there will be multiple cases that should be thrown out.

The stain this sheriff's office has left on the community should see it disbanded. They can't restore their reputation. A new sheriff's department or police force should be created to replace this one....from the most junior deputy to the sheriff himself. In the meantime, neighboring police or sheriff's should be placed into this jurisdiction and serve the public until the replacement law enforcement can be created. I don't believe anyone working there over a month was unaware what was going on....and the level of criminality here is unprecedented in my knowledge.

I suppose that the only upside is the deputies involved will be unlikely to survive to their first parole hearing.

I hope that satisfies your curiosity regarding my opinion of the case and this sheriff's office.
