I have just started reading the Bible, and I had no idea before this that Christians think that dinosaurs and man lived together. What I don't understand is that evolutionists and non believers say that this is not possible due to scientific evidence blah blah blah...my question is, how could a writer of the Bible "know" about dinosaurs if they didnt' exist with man? There would have been no evidence...so doesn't this furthermore prove that God wrote the Bible - if dinosaurs were, in fact extinct when man came about, then early man would have NO concept of them, and no scientific way of documenting them. Seems simple to me!
There is no dogmatic or commonly held belief on this in Christianity. The Bible never deals with dinosaurs, and there are many theories out there.
The Gap Theory/Pre-Adamite theory says that the dinosaurs were part of a pre-Genesis Creation that occurred between Gen 1:1 and 1:2, and that this is when the dinosaurs lived.
The Day-Age theory says that the word for "day" in Genesis is figurative, and that the word is used elsewhere in the Old Testament in this age-like period, which is true. Whether it is used in Gen 1 is debatable. But, if this is the case, then the dinosaurs could have lived in one of the ages. Did they die before man was created by God? Who knows, ask someone who holds this view.
The Functional Earth theory states that God created the earth to look much older than it really is.
The Literal 6-Day theory says the word for "day" in Genesis means a 24-hour period. This is difficult when it is coupled with the James Ussher's work that attempts to determine the age of the world through the lineage of those in the Bible. This assumes that all people are listed in Scripture and that no one is skipped. This would put the earth at just over 6000 years old, and does not account for the dinosaur findings.
There are many theories out there that all have the positive and negative aspects. In Genesis, God tells us vaguely about Creation. He does not tell us how He did it, but gives us clues. He created the world in 6 phases, and He made it out of nothing. How long were the phases? It is difficult to tell. To hold to a dogmatic belief on the theories is difficult, and we should center on the fact that God created the heavens and the earth, and know the theories, but not get to wrapped up in any of them because they all have their problems. Despite the theories having problems, though, nothing in Scripture has been found to lie. The problem is, especially with Creation, with our interpretation.
In Him,
