I don't believe in stock piling food or other things, and having YEARS of supplies on hand... To me, that shows a lack of faith and trust in God, that He will provide for us. Yet, at the same time, I believe we should have more than just a few days of food on hand. I always feel bad for those who have to run to the grocery store every other day and they buy just what they need for a couple days. Especially in this world of uncertainty, it's a good idea to have at least several weeks to several months of food on hand. I live in the Country and raise a big garden, do alot of canning and freezing....and I believe we should put up enough food to carry us from one GROWING SEASON to the NEXT GROWING SEASON. The less we have to depend on GROCERY STORES, the BETTER!

That looks great. It was only a couple generations back when that was the norm. My grandmother and aunts had mud rooms and storm cellars full of canned food. I have been telling myself for years I should learn, but I haven't. I end up giving lots away if the production is good, but I still have it in mind.

Those with a hefty supply aren’t subject to price increases and shortages. If that’s your larder it would cover a six month food supply with meat in tow.
I'm a vegetarian, never had a bite of any kind of meat....we use alot of beans & nuts for protein. Eaten along side whole grains, they combine to make a complete protein :). I buy my oatmeal and wheat in 50 lb. bags and keep them in plastic pails, along with other stuff.

The last few years, I've been dehydrating alot of things too, like tomatoes and zucchini ~

When we built our house, it was the 1st thing we did in the basement :). There are several Amish sawmills in the area so we got some rough cut lumber and made the shelves.

I give alot away too, and I just can't stand to see food wasted....so I keep trying to come up with ways to preserve what just keeps coming on at the end of the summer.... One year I made like 110 quarts of Tomato Soup...it's so good! Gave away a case to each of the kids for Christmas :).

I like to make Tomato Bread, too :) It smells like Pizza and is so Yummy :)

There are other ways to preserve food besides canning. Dehydrating and freeze drying are easier.

I think its important to have a well stocked pantry. Convenience moved us away from household economy. Self-sufficiency allowed me to rekindle old practices. There’s extra work but the results are satisfying.

We buy in bulk and no longer require a grocer. I work with several sources to get our supplies. Including the Amish.

That is great, Bella :) And the more food we make for our families this way, the healthier they will be. It's nice to meet someone who thinks along the same lines :)

I live in an apartment, so my main emergency food stores consist of various dried bean types, rice, wheat flour, honey, oats. Supplemented with available vegetables, like cabbage, onions, carrots, potatoes, spinach. Of course, I always have mixed nuts on hand and a couple loaves of Ezekiel bread. These would keep me alive for an extended period of time. I do have a large dehydrator that I need to be using, but haven't been.

Pull that dehydrator out, @Freth, and when there are fruits/veggies on sale, buy them and dry them :)

Thank you. My mother made a lot of things from scratch as did my grandmother. They believed in home cooked meals eaten as a family.

I fell in love with food from watching Julia Child. They were strict about television and PBS was a mainstay. I found The Frugal Gourmet at 19 and never looked back. I cooked my way through his books and found kindred spirits on the Internet.

I hung out on food sites and forums for chefs and foodies. We shared tips, hard to find items, and did monthly cooking challenges. I learned to test recipes and considered culinary school.

Julia’s death was the turning point. I enrolled in the fall and got a part-time job at a wine shop. I was in my element. I gave my classmates a tasting as a parting gift. My monger did it free of charge.

I contemplated catering and being a private chef. But I didn’t want the downsides. I eventually realized self-employment was best. But it took me in a different direction. My love of food never waned.

I’ve added other skills along the years and built a hefty cookbook collection. My grandmother gave me the first. Her copy of The New Yankee Cookbook. It’s well used.

Like most, I watched The Food Network in its early days. I soaked up the lessons and furthered it through PBS and travel programs. They were informative then.

We have five children and when they were young, we had a health food store and taught people how to cook healthy food...vegan style. I am a big believer that children need to learn to cook, so all 5 of the kids, (2 boys included) took turns by the week, cooking for the family. Our youngest son used to bake the bread that we sold in the store, 20 loaves at a time, and our youngest daughter made all the cookies we sold. it was a busy family operation! But as they got older and left the nest, it was too much for my husband and I to run, so we sold the walk-in store and now we do a mail-order store...and I have lots of opportunities to talk with people who need help changing their diet/lifestyle on the phone. Health is a part of our religion. We believe God has called us all to take care of the bodies He has given us....and if we love Him, we will want to do that. :)

Someday, if life ever slows down (hard with 12 Grandkids), I hope to write a cookbook :)

Well, Jesus does say not to lay up in store, but the Jews could be farmers, and they would have a harvest which needed to last until the next harvest, I would think.

But Jesus might mean not to hoard to no end for the sake of feeling secure. I think He approves of sharing what we have, in any case :) And your giving can bring you into loving with family and other people.

I agree. You’ve given them a wonderful foundation and running the store must have been fun.
