  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I bought my first bible! I bought an ESV large print (12 point, black letter) with a beautiful green duo-tone cover and I just love it. I'm only 34 bought already have pretty poor eyesight. I can still see the normal size print ok with my contacts/glasses but there are bad days I struggle. So I figured a large print bible will allow me many years to grow with the bible.

I bought a gel highlighter for highlighting versus but I'm wondering what is the best tool for writing notes? I saw various pens at the Christian store but I'm afraid of making a mistake and having it permanent. Can you share you bible note taking system with me? Thanks!

Congratulations! I encourage you to read your new Bible daily.

There are several ways to take notes. I'll tell you what I do.

I group passages together with parenthesis, usually by the divisions that are already indicated, but not always. It helps me keep the thoughts together, but more importantly it shows me what I've read. By the time I finish a Bible (every portion of it will be inside a set of these.)

Depending on the size of the margins and spaces, I will jot down quick notes. Usually this is to help me see quickly something I may want to look for in the future. For instance in the space below Acts 16:30 I have written "what must I do to be saved?" It's quoting verse 29. If I don't remember the exact passage when looking for this I can find it quickly. It's also highlighted (in crayon) along with several other verses.

I'll also jot down cross references as I come across them in the Bible. An example of this is in the margins around Colossians 1. This is a passage I use when discussing the divinity of Christ. I have other passages referenced there such as Jude 25, Titus 2:13, John 5:18-24 and so on.

I hope you enjoy your choice of the ESV!

What I would advise you to do is is highlight only passages of major themes in your bible and have a color code something like this:

*Red - salvation (The blood of Christ)

*Blue - The Holy Spirit (heavenly things)

*Green - Christian growth

*Yellow - Christian character (light)

Add your own colors as you wish...but use a separate notebook for your personal notes from sermons, Sunday School, and studies. Archive the notebooks as you fill them. As the years pass use the notebooks for reflection! They will show you your growth in understanding God's word.

 :amen:

Thanks! So far I'm really enjoying my new Bible. I like the color coding ideas. Looks like I'm going to need to get a journal as well!
