There are very few people who deserve hell.

I believe that we all deserve hell, that is what we earn through our sins. But thankfully, God's grace means we can have what we don't deserve, eternity with Him.

Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord."

Romans 3:25a "For God sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins and to satisfy God's anger against us."

Regardless of what is written in the Bible, just think logically about it for a moment. What have most people done that warrants eternal damnation and punishment?

I am just a regular human but if somebody does something to hurt or upset me I can forgive them, so why can't God?

Do you really believe that most of the population are destined for 'hell'. It doesn't make sense!!

We in the SA are not fundies and don't have to take the Bible literally. Thank God!!

I didn't say anything about destined for hell, what I said was that we all deserve hell. I believe that God has made it quite clear that we have ALL sinned, and that we ALL deserve punishment for it, and hell is that punishment, separation from God for eternity. But, because of His love for us He has made it possible for us to return to Him. We decide our destination, by either accepting or rejecting Christ.

You're right, we don't have to take the Bible literally, and that's another choice each person has to make for themselves. But think about this: If we aren't going to take the Bible literally, then we don't need to love one another, so we're all wasting our time helping others when we don't need to...

As for me, I will go with the Word of God.:)

And the Salvation Army is an army that wages war against Hell and Satan and his minions and sin (sin doesn't come from God ;) )

Or else, why would the S.A. exist? I encourage you to read S.A. literature (and the Bible). ;)

So, what you're saying is that we only need to love and help others because the Bible tells us to and if we don't believe the Bible it's a waste of time to do so?
What happened to good old human compassion?

Couldn't have said it better myself, Elmo. What we believe about the Bible or its content doesn't change the out come of its message. It may change the outcome of our own but then as you said that is up to us.

What happened to good old human compassion?

For some people loving and helping others, and compassion, only come about through reading the Bible. Compassion isn't human, it is a trait of God. God gave it to us, and we choose whether to use it or not.

I picked that particular example because it quite clearly represents the difference between who I was before I found Christ, and who I was after. I had no compassion or love for anyone. After accepting Jesus, I found so many verses in the Bible which talked about loving and helping others that I couldn't help but notice how little compassion I had for anybody. So, in my case, not taking the Bible literally on that would have meant I would still have very little love or compassion for anyone.

We all have different life experiences and because of that different verses affect each of us in different ways. But we have to be willing to accept that "All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness." (2 Tim 3:16)

Jesus also quite clearly says "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples." (John 8:31) How can we hold to His teaching if we don't take His Word literally? The passage which Abiel mentioned, and JoshuaCh1V9 posted, was spoken by Jesus. Verse 46 makes it clear that some people will "go away into eternal punishment."

Good quote! It is a shame that sentiment seems to have..uh .. gone out of fashion?

I believe this as well...remember what Jesus said about being "lukewarm". This should be a reminder that doubting the seriousness of hell and the many times Jesus mentioned it in scripture...I do not take people going to hell lightly. And people think the world is bad at times....
