  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

have noticed some conservatives are concerned about joining Moderate Christians. I thought I start a thread to discuss this.

I will start.......

I am a Conservative Christian who behaves in moderation with a relaxed, and open discussion regarding how I deal with the world, but who take Christianity seriously. I have no control of what is going on in this world. The solution to the problem is to have a strong relationship with my Lord along with an adequate knowledge of God is essential in the matter of spiritual truth and reality that provides me spiritual stability.

I like this quote from my other thread by Albion who responded to my thread. Still taking a break but I want to share what I have researched....
That's a Christian who behaves with moderation, that's all. Not a "Moderate Christian."

I am looking forward having friendly debates with my Christian brethren. Debating with grace is about loving other people by respecting how they practice their beliefs. I just let God handle their beliefs that I disagree with.

This weekend, I will be thinking of some good topics that we can "discuss". I think we will have lively discussiongs.

I'm pretty much the same as what is described above.

The only difference have is that I believe that while I cannot control what goes on in the world, I can have an effect on it by acts of kindness. How I present myself in my Christian walk.

More conversions are had by actions that cause people to question than trying to convince someone with words.

Talk really is cheap in a lot of instances where people are starved for simple small acts.

I love discussions. I despise debates.

As far as our Christian brethern, we need to work together as one body as described in Scripture. I see no reason to debate brethern but to acknowledge the common ground/foundation of our belief in Jesus Christ.

Well, if we are "Christians who behave with moderation" and not "Moderate Christians", that's fine with me, because until now there hasn't been a place for us, and we needed one.
LOL!

There is a difference isn't there?

I think most people would realize that it does not mean moderate in Christianity. But not so far left or right it turns those that are not in that particular mindset into something to be scorned.

I'm a Christian before liberal, conservative or moderate. But I believe it is best to treat others with care since we are to be the light of the world.

I agree with you Jim. :)

I don't have much to add except that I think people associate the word "moderate" with "lukewarm".

The more I think about it the more I agree. But that is definitely not what it means.

I don't know what word to use to replace it though.

Hm, I really do identify as moderate.

God loves us immoderately, and thus we should love in return.

But moderation in other areas--keeping a balance, as it were, between apathy and fanaticism--is important to me.

I'm currently reading A Generous Orthodoxy by McLaren and he coins the term Missional Christian, well actually he didn't coin it he nicked it off somebody else. It describes Christians who are trying to find a third way different from Liberal or Conservative,

On page 117 he describes it as thus 'To be and make disciples of Jesus Christ in authentic community for the good of the world''

Jim..arent some of the conservatives worried about joining the moderate forum because the rules in the conservative forum said that you can only be a member of one congregation? If so, that no longer applies since it will now be sitewide rules and we wont have voting priveledges. The ONLY thing it could make a difference on now is not being able to debate over in CC if they are members in THIS forum.

Actually it's OK to be a member of both, anyway.
It's only WWMC members who can't be CC members.

I honestly am not interested in debates with liberals or conservatives in any way quite honestly. If I want that i can go to general heresy (theology) or a debate/discussion section. I am here because I want to talk among like minded people. If this turns into a moderates debating with conservatives or any other group sexction I will just bow out of here as well. Not because serious debate cannot make either side grow but from my experience there is rarely any serious constructive debate on this website. Just my two cents

I agree. I really just want to be able to talk about the Lord without debate coming into the picture. :)

I agree with you.

BTW, can an Orthodox Christian be at home in the Moderate forum? I'm a member in the CC forum, but I don't participate much in there, and I'm not sure I'm conservative enough in some ways. I think my non sola scriptura, tradition favoring, liturgical Christian beliefs don't go over so well in there.

I too am moderate in my behaviour but not moderate in my christianity - it is an unlucky term, 'moderate christian'. I'm not lukewarm, I think of myself as balanced.
Oh my gosh!

Balanced Christians!

I like that term but I think others might take some offense.^_^

I'm about as Orthodox as you can get in my beliefs & I feel more at home here than anywhere.
