I own a long haired Hymalayan named Roger. He had his front claws taken out when he was with his previous owner. He grew up around many other cats that picked on him, which has made him not poop in the box, though he does poop usually right next to it. Fortunately, he does pee in the box, THANK GOD!

He also has an obsessive thing with licking, more than most cats. He always developes mats in his fur and I had bought a shaver for it. I brush him regularly but not every day as I should. I have finally decided to take him to a professional groomer to shave him; Afterwards, I'm going to brush him twice a day to keep him from developing mats. Does anyone think this is the best approach for a long haired cat?

Yes *Himalayans* need regular grooming and brushing to stay beautiful and mat free. And definitely take them to a professional groomer, I'm seen some pretty horrendous injuries from owners trying to clip their own cats. Himmies are beautiful cats. :)

I had a cat that was a himalayan mix that had similar bathroom habits. Himalayans are large cats and need very big boxes. I never did find one big enough for my 20+ pound cat. A simple solution is to purchase a piece of linoleum to put under it's litterbox area to protect your floors. As for brushing, I found that a comb in addition to a brush worked better to get through slightly matted areas.
