i've been pondering lately that for a long time i have been an independent christian. attended several different churches and now that the one i am in seems to be where God wants me for a while it has been difficult to break that independent way of being!
however now in trying to be in a team situation i'm wondering how on earth do i cultivate humility?

One method to cultivate humility is to remember your worst sins. Kneel before the Lord in prayer and confess your sins individually, it will remind you that you are low. Then remember all of your blessings individually, this will remind you that you are loved from on High.

I do this often. It also serves to keep the judgementalness away as well by reminding you that though you've sinned God has not turned away from you. Therefore, why should you turn away from others who have sinned.

I do not know where you are in your walk with the Lord, but it sounds to me like you are on the right road. Have fun with your new church. It feels good to have a new support center doesn't it?

Peace-

To become humble, spend time with people that already are humble. ;) Jesus obviously your ultimate example! Moses was named most humble man of the OT. Joseph, David, Jonathan, Ruth, Job, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Peter, and Paul to name a few other examples.

Proverbs filled with numerous verses about humility vs pride. Here are more:

Matthew 11:28-30 "Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith...Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

Philippians 2:3-8 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death--even death on a cross!

Titus 3:1-2 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men.

James 1:21 ...humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

James 3:13-18 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

1 Peter 5:5-7 ...in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.

btw...Got a whole folder on messages about humility vs pride. Would be glad to pm anyone the links.
