  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My husband was just watching a trailer from a dvd and said it was a good film and that the book was also good and that I should read it. After a bit of convo on that book I pointed to my bible that was sitting on the sofa and said "Do you want to read that book?". He said he'd read it but just can't remember it (he read it when he was a kid). So I said that maybe he'd like to read it again and he said "nah" (bare in mind he's dyslexic and doesn't like reading more than he has to...only books he's really, really interested in get read) "Not even little bits of it? The best bits?" I asked and he again he said "nah". However, he did say I should make a summary of it...some quotes and things summarising events and things and that he would read that. Now I have a challenge :D though I think I will focus on summarising St Johns gospel for now.

Just wondering if any of your spouses have read the bible? What did they think about it if they did? If they haven't read it have they thought about reading it or expressed an interest in reading it?

Wow, that's very encouraging Starelda!

Maybe you could get him the Bible on audio? Just a thought...

My husband doesn't know the Bible too well. A little bit. He's never really expressed any interest in reading it since I was saved. I've read a few passages to him here and there and he's very impressed by it. Or sometimes I'll tell him, "you know, the Bible says..." I try not to do this very often though because it can backfire.

I know you mentioned starting with the Gospel according to John and that's great. Most people suggest unbelievers start with John, but I actually prefer Romans. It explains the Gospel and breaks it down. It shows the sinfulness of man and that's soooo important. If someone isn't convicted of their need for a Savior, then they will never accept Christ. Just my humble opinion though!

I'll be praying for you and Phil. Keep the faith. Your husband is showing signs of a softened heart for sure!

God bless,

Jill, aka WashedClean

He certainly seems open, that's good news.
I agree with Jill about audio Bibles being a good idea. Faith comes from hearing the word of God!

There are also a few good versions of the life of Christ on video, but I'm not sure what to recommend. Some are more biblical than others so you'd need to check out anything before you give it to him. Can your pastor or home group leaders make any suggestions?

A summary, as he suggests, might be good, but may be difficult for you to produce.
Maybe you could do it as a sort of mini daily reading scheme for him, so he doesn't have to deal with a lot of print all at once?
Also that way you can take more time and not feel pressured to produce a whole "mini-book" for him at once.

Praying God equips you for the journey, and Phil develops an increasing appetite for the word of God.

Blessings, Susana

Oooooh, I like this idea Susana. Just whet his appetite a little bit. One thing I used to do was write Scriptures on 3x5 cards for memorization. Then I would ask Mark to help me memorize by giving me the Scripture verse and I would respond. Of course, I picked very specific verses that I wanted him to hear! I should really start doing that again...

Hope we helped a bit. Let us know how it's going Starelda.

Yes, very helpful  Thanks for your ideas. I think I'll stick with the summary plan for now as he said he'd read that plus he suggested I could put it all online for others to read also. I thought that was a good idea. Getting him to help with memorisation sounds good though...I think he'd help me with that and it'd be helpful to him in the process.

Yes! Memorisation is a great idea:
Romans 10:17
"faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ."

He'll have the word of God knocking about in his mind all the time, stirring him up. Praise God Phil is ready for this step!

God bless, Susana

That's great straelda:clap:

My dh used to read the bible from time to time in our 2-3rd yr of marriage. I would "accidently" see it in his car and there were a couple times I actually saw him take it on the porch to read it. He didn't claim to be a christian at that point, I think he was more curious as to why I was so passionate about a relationship w/ God. We also went to an "end time conference" that sparked his interest in reading revealtions. Somehow it fizzled out, and we are where we are today. But jusy gotta keep praying even tho that gets repetitive and tiring-God knows:crossrc:

Hi MERCY @ GRACE,

I just wanted to welcome you to CF. I hope you'll find lots of love and fellowship here. This particular forum doesn't get that much traffic, but we love to hear from others in unequally yoked marriages. Helps us realize we're not alone and we can support each other.

Sounds like seeds were planted in your husband. I will pray that they will grow!

Your Sister in Christ,

Jill/WashedClean
