  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was received into the Orthodox Church by baptism and chrismation. My parents were never big church-goers, and when we did, I was old enough at the time that I remember that I was never baptized at that church. Asking my parents outright was completely out of the question. So, to make sure, I went home not long before I was to be received into the Church to look through the family records, and I found no baptismal certificate or anything to indicate my parents belonged to any church, anywhere, ever, before the one that we attended when I was older.

So I figured, it was very unlikely that I'd ever been baptized, and if I had been baptized as a baby, my parents certainly didn't help me keep the baptismal vows made for me, seeing as, up to the age of seven, I thought "Jesus" was a cuss word. :( And aside from that, even if I had been baptized as a baby, there was absolutely no way to know if it was done by the correct Trinitarian formula, considering that my mother grew up in a nutty Pentecostal church that I suspect might have been one of those "oneness" Pentecostal groups.

So I told Father all of this, and he agreed that baptism was the way to go, and into the horse trough I went. Hooray for the Horse Trough Club! :D ;)

Well I haven't been received yet, but the Bishop has made his decision about me....(I've always been a problem child who requires a Higher Up). I was baptised as an infant in the Lutheran Church and then again when I was a teenager in the Baptist denomination. Our Bishop does not want me baptised again due to my INFANT baptism, but I will be chrismated. My daughter on the other hand, well, call me stupid, but when she was a baby, the only place that could do an immediate baptism was a local wedding chapel in Reno and it was done by a real minister...however, after reviewing the video tape of her baptism, the Bishop said that although it was a "very nice service" (he's so polite!) the minister never stated "for the remission of sins" and also that the minister used the "Name of Jesus" during the pouring instead of the Trinity. So he wants Fr. J to baptise her again, then chrismate...

All of this was actually supposed to happen this month, but it has been moved back to possibly the Feast of the Dormition because we are hoping to make it all part of a pilgrimage to St. John Maximovitch's grave in San Francisco and then on to the St. Herman of Alaska Monastery in Platina, CA. One big party! :) Then I will be able to truly say "My heart is in San Francisco..." (I love St. John of Shanghai!!! )

I was received by Chrismation only. My priest told me that was how I would be brought in, and I obedient. I was also a Baptist baptized by immersion and in the name of the Trinity. I was told that whatever was lacking in the baptism would be corrected by the Chrismation.

I've never been to a chrismation; I've only been to baptism/chrismations (including my own, another adult's, and three babies). Is it true that the Chrismation service is basically the same as the Baptism service, they just cut out the actual immersion? I think I read that somewhere but I'm not completely sure.

Chrismation.

I was baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as an infant. My priest, speaking for the bishop, agreed that whatever grace might be missing in my baptism was made complete in my chrismation.
