  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A former co-worker objected to trick-or-treating on these grounds:
Parents, grand-parents, authority figures etc spend countless hours teaching children they should "never take candy from strangers."
Then once a year we dress them up in costumes and encourage them to take candy from strangers
. It sends a mixed message.

To me Halloween is nothing more (or less) than the evening prior to All Hallows Day aka All Saints Day, which is November 1st in the west.
All Saints Day falls on the first Sunday after Pentecost in eastern traditions. ymmv

We, as a household, don't do the scary but we will put a pumpkin on the porch, leave the light on and give treats to anyone who stops by.
otoh, I do not object to the concept of momento mori but again ymmv.

Ironically the most offensive thing to me I've seen regarding halloween, was seeing a teenager in a Jesus costume.
(borrowing the words of a Christian contemporary song)

Dressing up is okay
Visiting neighbors is okay
Eating candy is okay.

Combining all three on the last day of October is evil.
What’s wrong with October? Lol

Yeah, I wouldn’t be ok with that either.
