• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I pop caffeine pills like they are candy and drink a few cans of Monster energy everyday, I can't seem to break this habit, any advice and advice on quitting smoking?

The caffeine and smoking especially combined is wrecking my physical health...and I think I'm a little caffeine sensitive as well.

Not a medical doctor.
BUT you appear to be self medicating to get away or out of the life you live. Review that life and your other bad habits and see if you can find a closer relationship to God that will fulfill those needs.

Often replacing a bad habit with a good one, delaying the response to the desire, or both will do the trick. Sometimes finding something to save that money towards helps motivate.

Well you're going to have to taper down off of the caffeine; if you try to stop abruptly you will have a monster of a headache comparable to drinking a case of beer in one sitting (that would probably kill you, but you know what I mean.) The only reason your body wants caffeine now is not to feel energetic, but to replace the caffeine that has left your body, which makes you feel depleted, and worse than if you hadn't drank coffee at all, and this process snowballs.

To stop smoking, it's all about learning to live your life that you lived before, but without the cigarettes (I know you're thinking duh.) Find something to replace the oral habits of cigarettes; for me it was jolly-ranchers, and it's been years since I've had a cigarette. Whenever I wanted one, I would get a jolly-rancher instead. You can try the patch or gum, I haven't but the gum really helped my friend, so some of these alternatives could help. Some people turn to vaping, but you still get the nicotine (the addicting ingredient), and will probably just go buy a pack of cigs very soon after. It's all about what works for you, but don't put yourself in a situation where you want a cig if you can help it.

Caffeine pills are really bad though. There's not much of a ritual to them though, you just pop them and that's it. it's not like smoking where you're body is in the habit of taking a drag and doing tricks with smoke. I'd recommend you get rid of the pills first and switch out Monster with coffee to wean yourself off.

The best method is to help others stop habits they want to break free of.
You don't need to be superman first.

Normally, I'd say to find something to replace your addiction with that is less harmful.
But, that sounds really complicated to replace, I'd recommend to ask a professional.

Measure the time between pill pops. Extend it. Measure the time between lighting up cigarettes. Extend it. 48 hours later, increase the extension time. Do the same 48 hours after that. Keep it up.

Otherwise, get ready for the hospital or the looney bin.

As @Blessed Each Day noted, come off the caffeine pills slowly, otherwise it will be too big of a shock to your system. Depending on how long an how much you smoke, the patch or nicorette might be an option. If you're not that heavy of a smoker or haven't been smoking that long, probably avoid these.

You're absolutely right, I assumed he was a long-term smoker, that's on me.

For me I quit before I had children or was even a Christian, I thought one day that if I could not do something that needed to be done, how could I ever expect my children to listen to me. At the time I did not even have any children. After getting saved though, I would recommend going to Phil 4:13 and memorize that verse and believe it and say it instead of smoking or drinking too much caffeine, I can do all things through Christ who strengthen's me. The same for any needed help to overcome the flesh, as you read the scriptures daily, asking the Lord to teach you as you read and verses will sorta jump out at you and if they really speak to you, memorize and say you verses in book order and you will be amazed at the wisdom you can really maintain when you hide them in your heart and be ready to share them with others as the Lord opens up a door of opportunity. I like to pray the scripture as I start each day, like Ps 119:18 open my eyes that I may behold wonderful things out of your law(word). Phil 4:4 let me look out not only for my own interest, but also for the interest of others. And others, different ones different days, for without Jesus we can do nothing. When you start looking to help others and apply it, you will see opportunities open up, the main things is that we learn to be obedient so that we can be a useful tool for the Lord. A saying I heard long ago, your walk talks, and your talk talks, but your walk talks louder than your talk talks. You can do it!

The caffeine and smoking especially combined is wrecking my physical health...and I think I'm a little caffeine sensitive as well.

The key to changing habits is to form new habits. It takes an incredible amount of willpower to stop a habit cold turkey, so it is also key to set good goals that don't set you up for failure. For example, if someone were trying to lose weight, setting a goal to lose a certain amount of weight in a certain amount of time very often leads to failure. So it is better to set goals that are easy to meet that will cause you to be better off no matter what else happens, and once those become habits, then it takes less willpower to make changes. For instance if they made the goal to go for a five-minute walk once a week, then they will be better off for meeting that goal regardless of the amount of weight they lose because of it. Once they do that for long enough and it becomes a habit, only then should they try extending how long they walk for or how many times per week. Setting an unrealistic goal of walking a few hours every day would only set them up for failure, and really it is more more important for someone to form a habit of regularly going for a walk, than being concerned with how far or how often they walk.

So with your particular addition, it is a little different because you are trying to stop something rather than start something, but rather than going cold turkey, I would suggest slowly weaning yourself off of it. For example, keep track of how many caffeine pills or energy drinks you consume per week and then subtract one and limit yourself to that for a month or two. You could also set a goal of going to bed 5 minutes earlier and slowly increase that so that you are more rested. Exercise can also be helpful to wake up or to stay alert, such as going for a walk or jog. An accountability partner can also be helpful.

Just stop. I recommend only one cup of coffee or tea only in the morning. Get rid of the pills and smoke and cans. Lots of health reasons which the years will magnify, and you will look bad and say, "I wish I had stopped".

Never give up stopping. One day it will "take"; perhaps today. Always throw the tempting substances away when you realize what you did; if you keep them you are saying, "I'm not stopping". Not a good thing to say for someone who is stopping. The actions and behavior need to match the intent. I you notice having a cigarette in your mouth, remove it immediately and destroy it. If you notice a can of energy drink in your hand, pour it out immediately.

Nutritional sulphur seemed to assist me in quitting smoking. It makes cell walls more permeable which aids the body in the detoxification process and in my case seemed to relieve many of the negative symptoms of withdrawal from cigarettes.

This is actually a summary of a book written by a doctor about MSM:
