How to speak in tongues

I can't believe churches try to make and act of God happen. That's almost demonic if you think about it, because Satan tries to "make" things happen that are of God. I myself have spoken in tongues through prayer and let me tell you something . . . you can ask God for it but it will happen when HE wants it to. You can force it upon yourself, it's something that God has to "give" you. I cannot even begin to desribe it, it was like my mind was saying "what are you doin? why are you babbling? quit! you aren't saying anything because I cant understand it" but then my spirit was saying "trust me, trust me, trust me" I wasn't even praying for it when God allowed me to speak in tongues. I was praying for people on my prayer list and all of a sudden I could "feel" a presence in the room. I looked around but I didn't see anyone but I could "feel" them. THAT's THE SPIRIT YOU GUYS!! your spirit can see things you cant! the presence got stronger and stronger. Then I got REALLY REALLY warm and started shaking uncontrollably. Now don't let that statement uncontrollably steer you away from this truth, God did not POSSESS me, but I was "anointed" in the spirit I was filled. And I just started speaking. Now I would be just like you and no believe this, but after I was done praying I felt so peaceful and I have a problem with listening to Eminem and bad music and the first thing I did was go and delete it off of my computer. THATS HOW I KNOW IT WAS THE SPIRIT. And I have NEVER been the same since.

I speak in tongues in my prayer life mainly. The only way you can speak in tongues is by recieving it from God by faith. Theres no "method's" its pure and simple child like faith.

Someone spoke of tongues needing interpretation...Do you know there are 2 different tongues..the person one for everyone (prayer life edyfiying) and the public tongue which needs interpretation (which edifys the body of christ)

I can testify from my life since i received the baptism in the holy spirit in my life it has increased my faith and has made God's presence even stronger in my life.
Its not the be all and end all of your walk but i belive it is important and nessesary and something you should ask God for and belive.

I used to speak in tongues. I was an alcoholic at that stage and fail to see how it is possible for such a person to have a gift of the spirit. .

It's quite possible for an alcoholic to speak in tongues or manifest any of the gifts IF they are saved and spirit filled.

hmmm, I have a story about this but need more coffee and time to wake up before I can begin, however, I do want to say that Suzannah pointed out something very important - if you are concerned about the "technique" then how can it be a gift from God? I do not have this gift, my mother does. I strongly believe in the gifts of the spirit - I will most certainly be back to tell my story - just as soon as I can wake up! lol........

I think everyone else pretty much stated everything I was going to say. I don't want to exhaust the topic, but I do want to put in my two cents. God gives gifts to us, gifts for ourselves and gifts to be used to edify others. Tongues in itself is both gifts. Tongues can be used to edify our own spirits, to strengthen our prayer life, and to communicate with God. Tongues can be used in the church, and when it is, it should be interpreted with no more than three interpretations. 1 Corinthians 14:26-28 clearly states this, "What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church. If anyone speaks in a tongue, two--or at the most three--should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God." If you are confused still and need clarification, consult the only infallible source: the Bible. All I can speak from is my personal experience, and I believe that praying in tongues is one of the best ways I can strengthen my relationship with the Lord.

Hey, I think something to keep in mind is that we shouldnt just strive to speak in tounges, cause thats only the evidence of the Baptism Of the Holy Spirit. We should seek God, not a language.. just something i learned when i was trying to speak in tounges. (btw, this is my first post, so hey everyone )
