how to keep the Sabbath

Hi,

Look up Isaiah 58. We shouldn't do anything of our own pleasure. Sabbath is a day of seperation from the world. Our thoughts and actions should be connected to the Lord only. TV is ok as long as it's about God. Sometimes I forgot to put gas in the tank on Friday, I had to buy gas on sabbath so I don't get stranded on the highway. This is ok. But better preparation should be made so it doesn't become indiference. Also, if I have to buy medicine on Sabbath, I would. It does not profane the sabbath.

The point is that anything that can be done on other days of the week should not be done on Sabbath.

Also, celebrate the Sabbath like the jews do. SDAs often make it a chore. Make Sabbath the special day of the week: wearing best clothes on sabbath, buy fresh flowers, play special music, prepare special food, use best china for sabbath dinner... Do anything that make sabbath a day of joy that we look forward to all week long.

Hope this helps,

We all have difficulty trying to keep the law by our own power. This is why God promises us He will help us to keep the law by writing the law on our hearts: Jer 31:33, Heb 8:10, 10:16. It's the by the covenant of Grace, the holy spirit will empower us. When we become 'born again', through the baptism of holy spirit, the spirit will take control of our 'old' body so that our action will reflect Jesus' character which is revealed by the law.

Good question and you must realise that there is no one answer that will cover every situation.

We do not know if you are married, kids etc.

So I will tell you how we keep the Sabbath in our home.

I like the advice my mum gave me many years ago when she said "guard weel the edges of the Sabbath"

Don't be in a hurry to get rid of the Sabbath and do not be slow to welcome in the Sabbath hours.

Our SDA membership is only small where we live and very scattered.

We try and get together every second Friday night to open Sabbath and have a light evening meal/snack.

We sing, read God's Word and talk about how the Lord has blessed since the last time we met.

We do not stay too long and try to be home by 9 pm.

Friday afternoons are spent preparing for the Sabbath, cleaning, cooking etc. Things that can be done before the Sabbath. We prepare our Sabbath lunch as we live some distance from Church and often stay behind and have lunch with other Church members.

Then we often linger and have an informal Bible study. During summer this is very good as we have kids that need to be kept busy even though it is Sabbath.

In the afternoon we will often visit other SDA's that are sick and maybe even in hospital.

If we do all that before we know it is time to close Sabbath with a short reading from the Bible or another appropiate book.

We do not do work on the Sabbath that can be done on another day. Same as buying and selling. I always make sure that I have enough fuel in the car so I do not have to buy it on the Sabbath.

You are probably thinking, "what if there is an emergancy"?

They happen and if that is the case then each issue is looked at when it happens.

My wife was called into work one Sabbath while we were at Church. She works in an old folks home. They have to be fed and looked after. She went in and helped out. In about 6 years that is the only time she has had to work.

I will go onto the internet but only to Church sites and here as well. We do not watch TV apart from the SDA channel, Hope and 3ABN.

Movies, DVD's etc are not watched unless they are of a spiritual nature such as evangelistic series that have been put out by the SDA Church.

Hope this helps you out and like you said the Sabbath should not be a chore at all.

Blessings

When one has a relationship with the Creator one will know how to spend time with the Creator every day. What others choose to do in their relationship is their business e.g not all married couples do the same things - though there are certain activities that are or should be common to married people....What I am trying to say is when people ask the what should we do on Sabbath you will probably get as many answers as there are Adventists some of them believing their way is the one true way.

Agreed.... there is no manual on it... the relationship one has with Christ will dictate how one spends everyday with God.... sabbath or not....

I believe the gentleman is asking a genuine question and as such just to answer with "relationships" is not good enough.

Of course a relationship with Jesus Christ is the most important thing.

Sabbath has never and will never save anyone in and of itself.

We all know that but we do have guidelines that are helpful in showing people who ask about the Sabbath.

You can not keep the Sabbath 100% holy, because none of us are 100% holy ourselves.
But you should not do any of your own pleasure on the Sabbath, and you should do no work. It is a rest day. This day belongs to God, and you should do only Godly things on the Sabbath. TV, is filthy, full of murders, idolatry, and sin of every type, and should not be watched on the Sabbath day. If you're watching some Christian station or video then I suppose it's alright, but there are still commercials, which contain just as much garbage as the shows. The 4th commandment says nothing about not buying on the Sabbath, just no work, so if you buy from a machine (something that glorifies the Lord) on the Sabbath, then I suppose it wouldn't be an offence, for you are not making any stranger (a clerk or store attendent) work. Eating out on the Sabbath is also a debatable issue, I personally do not think it is right to do so on the Sabbath because you are making the waiters work for you. You should prepare for the Sabbath friday, making your meals, cleaning your house, filling your car full of gas, etc. Read the scriptures concerning the Sabbath and make your own wise decisions on how you should keep them Sabbath. My advice though, remember the little saying, "Better to be safe than sorry..." keep that in mind. Better to be careful not to break the Sabbath than to be too liberal and break the Sabbath.

Right on!! When we have Jesus in our hearts we will naturally want to do what He wants us to do. We shouldn't be so worried about what to do or not on the Sabbath, just so long as we do what the Holy Spirit convicts us to do.
Everyone is on a different level in their relationship with Christ, so everyone will keep the Sabbath just a little bit different than everyone else.
