I would also point out that the article is entitled "4 Windows Millennium Horrors and How to Scare Them Off." Hardly a ringing endorsement! Above the title it says 'Windows ME Nightmares," implying these four are just par for the course.

As the article said, there are work arounds for the 'horrors.' Why should an OS have horrors and require workarounds?

I'll take one of those grains of salt as well. :)

They are only "workarounds for those who weren't aware of how to do it right to begin with." Those of us who knew didn't run into these problems. It's why we do the job we do.

In my opinion that's exactly my point. A desktop OS should not require skills exhibited only by those who do those types of jobs. It should just work. Certainly that's how Microsoft sells itself!

It should not take the skillset of an IT professional to run a desktop. It's great that your knowledge got you a job. My grandmother should not need that knowledge to run her computer.

No OS is perfect, but for non-IT professionals, I've seen few that cause more problems than Win ME. The fact that an IT pro can fix it is cold comfort to Joe User.

Unless you are running anything Windows ME & earlier. Those OS' absolutely suck and have so many bugs in them it makes Mexico look like Antarctica. XP is better; yet has it still has plenty of security issues, probelms, etc. snip...
I have to disagree, I've been running Windowns 98se for years and have yet to have a problem. The newer OS, that is XP, has caused so many problems I don't even bother with it anymore. I'll admit that 98se has its problems, but with the security issues with XP popping up every month, I'll stick with my 98se with minor problems.

There are security issues in Win98se too, its just that Microsoft don't tell you they are there.
They tell you with XP because they have provided updates, with Win98 there wasn't a suitable way to provide the updates (as broadband internet wasn't available) so the Windows Update feature wasn't as integrated into the OS or as easy to use as the WinXP one.

But yeah, the problems are in Win98 (se or not) they just don't offer updates and patches and so you never hear about them. Unless there is a major virus which exploits a weakness, in which case Win98 is listed in the fixes page along with Win2000, WinXP and the rest.

People have short memories :p 9x kernel OS'es had their fair share of security problems, just like the NT kernel based OS'es do. :|

Win 95C and 98SE were both very decent Windows though, although they were 32 bit extensions for a 16 bit patch to an 8 bit operating system written for a 4 bit processor by a 2 bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition.
