• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi, i can't stop worrying over little things that may have been a sin. I've read multiple times that the "cure" for scrupulosity is having a tutor, like a priest or something. I'm not very fond of this because of personal motives. Anyways its not gonna happen.

Is there something else i can do? I don't want to bother the chaplains every time. What do i do?

Getting Godly council is always good if you can find a good one.
Still with Scrupulosity to get rid of it instead just live with it you will have to pray MASSIVELY!!!!!!!!!!!! (James 5:16)

Fasting is also good and getting hands laid on you by Holy Spirit filled people. (Mark 16:17-18)(Matthew 17:21)

What's coming in your mind is attacks from the enemy that you are to cast down in JESUS name. (2 corinthians 10:5)

Say you have a sound mind and will NOT worry. (2 Timothy 1:7)

You should read (Psalms 18) four times a day out loud and it will strengthen you.

I'm praying for you.
GOD Bless!

I found that focussing on the fact that God is love (1 John 4:8) and that God loves me was the biggest help. Stay away from people whose faith is so weak that they live in constant fear of falling down or of God punishing them. It is best to take guidance from people with strong faith who act from love not fear. They can be recognised by these qualities:
Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance (against such there is no law).

The Christian world is full of clanging cymbals. Empty vessels make the most noise. Ignore those preaching and sowing hate and fear, they do not know Lord Jesus Christ. Be blessed :twohearts:

I suffered from bad scrupulosity but got over it. I cried out of repentance even because of the smallest "sins" like accidentally saying something that is incorrect, which was of course a lie. Then I realized it was scrupulosity and stopped my compulsions. You should do the same thing if you want to be healed of OCD.

Don't worry over any sin. Jesus has paid the price for all your sins if you believe and trust in Him:)
You should still confess your sins, but don't do it when you are guilty. Feelings such as guilt are unreliable and your OCD can easily alter them. Confess when you have sinned, repent and believe in Jesus.

The problem is, I don't know when I'm sinning or not. So i just go like "better safe then sorry" and ask forgiveness.

I did that too. I told myself it's just OCD and started asking forgiveness only for ~10 times a day (for the biggest of them which were most likely sins) when it was something like 1000 before. It felt really horrible to commit sins and not confess them, but eventually I realized they weren't sins at all.

You would not necessarily be bothering a chaplain all the time, just to get help. Sometimes it might only be down to someone with authority you trust having a few choice words to say to you.

You don't need a tutor. It might help, but it's not necessary. If your OCD is really bad, it might be good to get a therapist. But the key, in any case, is learning not to respond to your obsessional fears. So if, for example, your obsess about trivial sins, and your compulsion is to confess them, then you need to practice not confessing unless you know something is wrong. The problem with OCD is that we're never sure whether something is an obsession or not, because the OCD makes us doubt it. But usually we can sort of tell, because the feeling of OCD is a different (yuckier) feeling than normal concern/guilt/etc. Learn all you can about OCD and scrupulosity, and keep asking for help on here as you need to. Check out websites like Jackie Lea Sommer's blog and ocdandchristianity.com too.

If I do or think something a little (or a lot) on the sinful side I might make a sign of the cross and pray 'Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy upon me' but obviously one cannot reasonably do that constantly in public. We can keep an open dialogue with Lord Jesus Christ though and pray the little prayer without making the sign of the cross. We are naturally sinful though so we can also just pray for forgiveness of our sins before we sleep or first thing in the morning. We are saved, loved and forgiven :twohearts:

It's best to work with a therapist who has experience treating OCD by doing ERP (Exposure Response Prevention).

Relax. God is not a monster. Is God more severe than a loving parent? If not, then things will be OK.

If you read this, you're probably stil struggling with this problem. I've struggled with this for years now, believing many many times that I was undoubtedly going to hell for commiting the unfoegivable sin. It got to a point where I didn't know if drinking from a glass of soda at a specific speed would condemn me to hell. I was a slave.
Here's the thing with this. You need to be aware of what this is. To me, mystically, it's God's call for you to freedom, I'll explain why.
First, the mind. There is a survival mechanism in you which is faulty. See, when we fear something, the mind makes the fear real so we can rum from it. For example, I fear I will be attacked = mind makes the fear real and BELIEVES you will actually be attacked. In religious terms. If you fear blaspheming against God... guess what your mind will do. Blaspheme. This is the mind aspect, which should be treated by a psychiatrist or psychologist.
Second, the soul. You believe God is evil. This is the core belief in you that is causing you problems. And you are scared to recognize that you believe he is evil because well... this is the worst. And to add to the sauce, you are acting out ways of self-righteousness to compensate for your sins. You say X prayer, do Y thing, avoid X thought, etc etc etc. Get this straight. YOU WILL NEVER BE AT PEACE WITH GOD THIS WAY. The ONLY, absolute way to find a way out is this... 1. God will put you in a position where you realize that yes, all these sins are done willingly. 2. You have the ability to leave sin, but. 3. You don't want to. And this is a massive, and impossible trap to get out of.
So... once you realize you cannot free yourself from the trap, you will experience what St. Paul experienced when he said: I do the evil I hate, and not the good I want. Thanks be to Jesus that freed me from this. And this is the key to your struggle. Accepting that Jesus died for ALL of your sins, and that he holds the key to cutting the root of this sin in your heart.
See, your sin is really pride, for thinking you can justify yourself with God with your actions. It's called self-righteousness. Only in Jesus wil you find the innocence and freedom you seek. Innocence of recognizing that you are guilty and freedom to not be scrupulous about your actions and live life and serve God joyfully. A scrupulous person is a useless person.
