  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is Google's product?

You are.

Who are Google's customers?

People that want to make money off of you or otherwise manipulate or watch you.

Who needs Google?

Oh look, more conservative claims of martyrdom. Google does not care that you are conservative and they are not actively trying to sabotage your search results. Google has enough ethical issues without making things up to appear persecuted.

Was there a reason you wanted to post a bunch of links unrelated to my response?

How To Stop Using Google Search On Your Computer And Phone
There's always a curious irony when a business intentionally seeks to alienate a large portion of its customer base.

Personally, I've never used 'Brave' as a browser but I have migrated to Duckduckgo for searching.

Speaking of that exact same curious irony:

‘DuckDuckBye’: Conservatives Revolt After DuckDuckGo Vows to Down-Rank ‘Russian Disinformation’ Sites

Fortunately for the consumers of Russian disinformation, it appears there are many ways to obtain it.

Not that I want 'disinformation' but I would like to make that determination without the assistance of an algorithm. I'd rather my search engine of choice not steer me in the direction they want me to go.

You want a search algorithm without an algorithm?

Maybe just download the internet and use control-F.

I want a search without being steered thank you.

Very funny.

While I understand what you're trying to say, by its very definition, the algorithms the search engines use steer you somewhere. That's what they are supposed to do.

They create a list of relevant or supposedly relevant sites based on tags, based on page content, based on popularity, based on freshness, and if I request it also based on region or images. OK, that is done by an algorithm. It isn't done by hamsters. The result is I get to steer through the listed sites by my own choice. If I want to go to the 14th page of results I can do so. A respectable search engine does not censor based on politics. A search engine that I want to use does not protect me from political thought because they don't like that political thought. I want to be able to see anarchist, communist, royalist and all other sorts of political views and not just be fed what the overlords allow me to see.

I was an early adopter of DuckDuckGo and have recommended it countless times. I'll have to see how this plays out and then figure out what to do. Perhaps search.brave.com will be my next. Too soon to tell.

They create a list of relevant or supposedly relevant sites based on [many things]

And how do they show you the most relevant sites on page 1? The algorithm has editorial choices built into it. For instance with DuckDuckGo, "Weinberg has refined the quality of his search engine results by deleting search results for companies he believes are content mills, such as Demand Media's eHow, which publishes 4,000 articles per day produced by paid freelance writers, which Weinberg states to be "low-quality content designed specifically to rank highly in Google's search index"."

Is that refining the search quality or 'censorship'?
