I see a pattern in this scripture. This pattern agrees with pauls teaching that faith comes by hearing, and it agrees with Christs words which so often tell us to "hear if we have ears". Jesus performed miracles so that people would believe he had power to forgive sin, that was the purpose of the miracle. See John 6. Jesus only heals the man after he is accused of blasphemy, he did the miracle to prove a point.
See also John 20. Thomas doubted and wouldn't believe unless he seen with his own eyes. The scripture then says that those who don't see but hear are blessed. IT also says that those things were written, so that we might believe that we have eternal life. The emphasis is again on hearing the word, but not seeing miracles with natural eyes. Look at the Lords statement in John 4 which says "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.”. Look what Christ says about an adulterous generation needing to see signs and wonders.
Look at pauls words when he says that Jews seek sings and Greeks seek wisdom but Christ is both wisdom and power for those who believe. All of this teaches me that i don't need to see a miracle, nor do i need to be healed either. My healing is in heaven. Paul teaches us to look at the things that are not seen rather than the things that are seen. Hes talking about looking toward heaven, waiting for our resurrection, but hes not talking about looking for miracles on earth. Faith comes by hearing. Blessed our your ears for they hear. Let him who has ears hear.
John 20:24 Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”
So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”
26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.”
28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Jesus said to him, “Thomas,[d] because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
That You May Believe
30 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
John 4:46 So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. 48 Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.”
49 The nobleman said to Him, “Sir, come down before my child dies!”
50 Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your son lives.” So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way. 51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, “Your son lives!”
52 Then he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” 53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and his whole household.
54 This again is the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.
Matthew 9 So He got into a boat, crossed over, and came to His own city. 2 Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.”
3 And at once some of the scribes said within themselves, “This Man blasphemes!”
4 But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’? 6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—then He said to the paralytic, “Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” 7 And he arose and departed to his house.
