Using data from years, many decades ago, but it's outdated now... We have new information that changes some of those theories I think... Or at least challenges them...The simple answer is that scientists have accumulated data about the motions of the elements of the universe (stars, planets, galaxies, etc.) ... and concluded that everything is moving away from each other (most like the particles flung apart in the aftermath of a great explosion).
From this, they have theorized the "Big Bang", or, as I like to call it, the "Let there be Light" moment. Extrapolating back using the current distances and outward movement of the various elements of the universe (and doing the math), ... it is theorized that this "explosion" took place some 15 billion years ago.
