How much should you spend on an engagement ring?

Edit: I want to get her an emerald because she likes green. What say you ladies?

What say you???? You watch the O'Reilly Factor on FNC don't you? :p

Since I am Irish I would most definately prefer an emerald, and diamonds are not this gal's best friend. My beagle Copper is LOL :D !

OP, are you sure that your lady wants a ring and will wear it? Some gals-including meself-just don't like wearing jewelry. I think spending in excess of $200 on jewlery is too much. The money saved could go towards your wedding, or better yet, your honeymoon ;) Do you have any family heirloom rings that you could use?

I know I'm way too young to be talking about this but I had a cool thought conserning an engagement ring. It was on the Simpsons, where Homer gives Marge an onion ring as an engagement ring because he has no money.

I just thought it was a cool way of showing how it's what is inside that matters and not how much the ring cost. :)
