  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How many Sci Fi geeks are here? And what are your favorite shows?

I really enjoyed Stargate Universe. Too bad they canceled the show. I have been hooked on SciFi since Ultraman and Johnny Sokko and his flying robot way back when. This was about the same time the original Star Trek came out. I like it as long as it is not cheesy like some of the shows on the SciFi channel.

I thought SG Universe was really good, I hope that come out with a follow up movie
Unfortunately I don't think there was a strong enough fan base to justify a movie. Too bad too. I really didn't like how they ended the series. It was nice that Eli came into his own, but overall it was really very unsettled.

I know this thread is old but still posting a reply. I liked Star Trek next generation but recently I have been watching past episodes of Sanctuary. I know it has been cancelled but anyone watch this show? I like Amanda Tapping. She plays strong characters.

Just finished watching final episode of FRINGE. Pretty lame ending. IMHO of course. Anyone watch? Comments?
Yeah... it wasn't as bad as the LOST finale, but did have some pretty serious problems. The idea of changing the future to stop the observer invasion was a logical mess. If they didn't come back, Peter would have died when he fell through the ice as a child and the entire story of Peter and Olivia would never have happened. For that matter, Walternate wouldn't have been distracted by September when creating Peter's cure in the first place and Walter would not have needed to cross over to save him. I did like what they did with September's story line. He was kinda the core of the "humanity over intelligence without emotion" theme. I did appreciate that they had Olivia cross over to the other universe one last time. I was really hoping they'd do that.

At least they got to provide some closure. Drives me nuts when shows are cut short with a cliffhanger ending. Alphas was just cancelled and I would really have liked to see another season or two instead of just the cliffhanger finale. It was just finding its stride too...:(

yeah that's what my DH said... hence why I never watched after Rose left, 'cept one... the one where they meet Shakespeare, I think only 'cuz it happened to be on TV right before something else I wanted to watch and I was curious about Martha.

I know a number of people who found Martha to be their favourite Companion. Smart, assertive, and in a great opening episode with the Judoon on the Moon!

Now, I loved the intensity of BSG, which I've seen all the way through twice. LOVED IT! I loved the writing, the characters, the pain, the post-9/11 influences on the script (trauma & suicidal thoughts so different to the 'cowboys in space' version of Battlestar in the 70's and 80's). As a Christian I loved the weird fusion of Sci-Fi and a sense of Exodus, as if the whole thing were a pilgrimage engineered by a (comparatively remote and removed) 'higher power'. I just enjoyed that as a back-story for some reason, even though our God is far more intimate and personal.

Then after BSG I started watching Firefly and wondered what all the fuss was about. I think I was at episode 3 and still wondering. Then by half way through it clicked: this show was just plain FUN! It still had great character writing like BSG, but wasn't about epic and important events like a whole civilisation on the run. The Firefly was the ship no body cared about. It was the opposite. It's the little cargo freighter the Enterprise would just zoom past in the infinite night of space! By the end of the movie Serenity, I was mourning the end of the series: seriously in a state of shock that it was all over!

Now, my guilty viewing pleasure is... well, not really pleasure but mostly pain and endurance. It's The Walking Dead. It's confronting and horrible, but I watch it with a non-Christian mate and it's leading into all sorts of interesting chats on a Friday night after work. But it haunts me all night long. I dream about it. I had a few years in the army straight after high school, and the one thing I keep re-dreaming, over and over again, are constant scenes of calculating how many men I had in my platoon as I faced the hoards of undead. Nasty. Not my favourite: even though it has great character writing and follows a theme I'm interested in: what happens after the end of civilisation?

I loved Sliders until it went to the sci-fi channel and they killed it, and basically every main character.

The old Twilight Zone is probably the best science fiction show of all time.
Then there's Quantum Leap, because I love time travel.
I love the new Outer Limits.
X-files
Smallville
Star Trek
Eureka

I love anthology shows. I wish they would make another Outer Limits Twilight Zone type of show again.

Wow - last time I posted in this thread was 2013! I'm getting old.

Sci-Fi update since 2013...

TOP PRIORITY IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN IT YET!

The Expanse! It's the BSG for the 2010's - it is ESSENTIAL watching for any true Geek - period!
Indeed - some might even rate it better than BSG. Some have rated it the best Sci-Fi series in history!
Trailer below. You're welcome.

END OF THE WORLD:-

Last of Us: yes - it's a zombie show - but with a bit more credibility and scientific plausibility than the undead Walkers of "The Walking Dead." Oh - and unlike Walking Dead where the show explores the heroes just trying to find somewhere safe to live - and of course they cannot or the show ends - this explores much further out, and much more. Half way through the opening episode there's a bit of a time-jump - and the implications of that just blew my mind! The very premise of the story is totally different to Walking Dead - so we get to see a variety of communities - some functional and attractive - some utterly awful. My favourite zombie show ever. (Never thought I would say that line - as I don't go LOOKING for zombie shows! I don't like them!)

JUST FOR FUN... FALLOUT
Now there is Fallout - which I think of as "Mad Max with Monsters and Mech warriors." It's just so much fun!

SILO: This is a more serious version of Fallout. What happened on the surface? Who built the Silo's? What is GOING ON!? The characters and world-building are so complex in this series I had to read the books to find out what happened next.

The PERIPHERAL: So good - but sadly not in production any more! I'm going to have to read the William Gibson Peripheral books - when he finishes them!

3 BODY PROBLEM: This is without a doubt one of the more cerebral, serious, and important Sci-Fi series I have seen. The story is told across such a grand scale I'm not sure how they are going to handle the next books. I have not read them yet - but the story must move forward through time in a major way. Seriously - this show hit some major keys from my years of watching Isaac Arthur's Science and Futurism channel on YouTube.

SEE: Apple+ One of the great problems in post-apocalyptic series set in the far future is answering the question, "Why on earth have they not dug up all the old libraries and surviving tech - and rebuilt yet?" SEE offers an intriguing answer - what if a virus sent the whole world blind? Imagine today's world of 8 billion suddenly cut back to 2 MILLION, set 500 years in the future. That's what everyone going blind does to the human race!

I'm a little conflicted over raving too much about this show - as I found some of the characters annoying. Jason Momoa was reliable in his usual role. I don't know if it was the writing or acting of some other characters - but they get the job done.

The thing that got me in was the world-building. The "What if...?" and "How do they..." and other surprises.

The show explores the adage "In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king!" Very rarely, babies are born with immunity to the virus. Sight has become a much feared mystical power - and "Witch hunters" must track down the sighted and burn them!

WARNING: The lead villain in this show had 2 really annoying and in my view unnecessary 'adult moments' in the first season where she goes to 'pray'. The irony is there's not a lot to see - but it's a bit noisy and annoying. Just fast forward! If you can get passed those - the series is quite interesting.

POLITICAL - THE 'GEORGE ORWELL' CATEGORY:-

OK - and for today's political climate my pick is ANDOR! That is some seriously good Star Wars - but it's more like reading George Orwell than Sci-Fi. Once you have finished the 2 seasons make sure you finish with Rogue One. Notice how it follows on so well!

Swash-buckling fun

Mandalorian, and all those other Star-Wars spinoffs.
Marvel TV series - but getting a bit stale these days.

Speaking of super-hero shows - in the category of "what if Superman turned bad?"
Invincible
cartoon series: fantastic! A lot of gore - but not as 'adult' as the next one.
EXTREME WARNING: (I had to fast-forward past many scenes.) The Boys! This show gets downright NASTY!
It's also very political about MAGA-ish themes in the USA now - through a superhero lens.
