  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think I am beginning to understand a little better. Nothing that Jesus says in the Gospels was said to you, it was only said to the Jews. The Beatitudes, the Lord's Prayer, admonitions to feed the hungry and clothe the naked- none of this was said to you. All that you know about Jesus comes filtered through (some) of the writings of St. Paul? Am I starting to understand this?

This is tragic. Not to have one word from our Sweet Savior said to you, only 2nd hand through St. Paul. I could not bare to believe this and live this way. How can you have a relationship with Someone who never spoke to you, not even in the Gospels?

In my Church the Gospels are of utmost importance, often bound together in a separate book from the rest of the New Testament. The Epistles are important but secondary to the Gospels and interpreted in the light of the Gospels.

No, there are many beautiful spiritual applications in that which you cited, as there are in the OT, "...for our learning...."(Romans 15:4), but they are not doctrine for our obedience. If you are contending that the doctrine contained in Matthew-John is equivalent to what Paul wrote in Romans-Philemon, you are being intellectually dishonest.

"Red Letter" syndrome

The Lord Jesus Christ, by His own admission, spoke nothing of Himself-all His words were His Fathers's words. Part of the defintion of a prophet is "one who speaks for another"(for eg., Moses speaking on behalf of the LORD, Aaron speaking for Moses-Exodus 4:12,15("put words in his mouth"),16("thy spokesman"); 7:1; Deuteronomy 18:18("will put my words in his mouth").

The Lord Jesus Christ was a prophet, "the prophet": Deut. 18:15;Mt. 13:57,21:11;Mk. 6:4; Luke 1:76,4:24,7:16,24:19;John 1:45,4:44,6:14,7:40,9:17; Acts 2:30,3:22,23,7:37. The defintion fits the Lord Jesus Christ's own admission:

"Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.' Jn. 8:28

"For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak." Jn. 12:49-50

"Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works." Jn. 14:10

Thus, the Lord Jesus Christ was fulfilling His role as a/the prophet-He was speaking for His Father in Heaven-the words He spoke were His Father's words, not His(as was true for all the prophets).
(The office of prophet no longer exists-God's revelation of Himself to mankind was completed("fulfil the word of God"-Col. 1:25) with the revelation given to the apostle Paul from the risen, ascended, and glorified Lord Jesus Christ from heaven, and thus eliminated the need for this office. Those who claim they are prophets, speaking on God's behalf("thy spokesman") of the LORD, speaking the LORD's words which have not already been given in Genesis through Revelation, had best open the back of the Bible, immediately after Revelation, and start writing "some more Bible").

Yes , ignorance of the teaching of the Apostle Paul and the tradition of the so called early "church fathers" has confused 99.9 percent of Christendom. We need to listen to our Apostle, Paul.

The RCC, although corrupt, is at least consistently corrupt, and does follow Peter and the set-aside(temporarily) kingdom program. This, in contrast to most of so-called "Christianity", which combines the Kingdom program with the mystery program as revealed to Paul, i.e., they follow Peter and Paul.

The Body of Christ's prophet, or leader, is the apostle Paul, "...the apostle of the Gentiles...."(Romans 11:13). Just as Israel followed Moses, believers in this dispensation are commanded by the risen, ascended, and glorified Lord Jesus Christ to follow Paul: 1 Corinthians 4:16, 11:1; Philippians 3:17, 4:9; 1 Thessalonians 1:6; 2 Thessalonians 3:9; 1 Timothy 1:16.

His writings are scripture, the inspired word of God(1 Thessalonians 2:13; Titus 1:3; 2 Peter 3:15,16), and are the Lord Jesus Christ's words and commands in this dispensation: Romans 15:18; 1 Corinthians 14:37; 2 Corinthians 13:3; 1 Thessalonians 4:2; 1 Tmothy 6:3 .

Thus, if the scripture's testimony is to be believed, the Lord Jesus Christ spoke the words of God the Father, while the Lord Jesus Christ's words are given through the apostle Paul-"Red should be black, and black should be read."

The Lord Jesus Christ appointed Paul as :

-our apostle(not Peter, nor "the 12"): Romans 11:13; 2 Corinthians 11:5; Galatians 2:8; 1 Timothy 2:7; 2 Timothy 1:11

-our pattern; 1 Timothy 1:16

-the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles in this dispensation: Romans 15:16; Ephesians 3:7,8; Colossians 1:23-25

-a preacher: 1 Timothy 2:7 2 Timothy 1:11; Titus 1:3;

- a teacher of the Gentiles: 1 Corinthians 4:17; 1 Timothy 2:7; 2 Timothy 1:11

- a prophet: 1 Corinthians 14:37

-the masterbuilder, having laid the foundation of the Body of Christ: 1 Corinthians 3:10

-a steward of the mysteries of God: 1 Corinthians 4:1

-the administrator, "steward", for the present dispensation of the grace of God: Ephesians 3:1-9

-authoritative: Titus 2:15; 2 Corinthians 13:10

Paul calls The LORD God to witness more often than any other biblical writer, and no other biblical writer spoak with an oath more than Paul: Romans 9:1; 2 Corinthians 1:18, 11:10,31; Galatians 1:20; Philippians 1:8; 1 Timothy 2:7.

[/indent]Yet, they were all baptized. They did so out of obedience to Christ.
19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Matthew 28:19-20

Not being baptized, when you have the opportunity to do so, is a great sin. Why would you want to willfully disobey Christ and teach others to do so?

You learn through repetition:

You fail to rightly divide. I understand that while all scripture is "for our learning"(Romans 15:4), it is not for our obedience. We can learn many spiritual applications from all of the Bible, but doctrine for the Body of Christ in this dispensation is found in Romans through Philemon-only there will you find the doctrines of our salvation, justification, sanctification, glorification, propitiation......... as they pertain to us. Do you do the following, or do you just "throw it out"? Answer honestly and specifically, not in generalities:

Do you follow the Lord Jesus Christ as one under the Law?

"Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not." Mt. 23:2,3/Galatians 4:4

=observe the law!

Do you do Mt. 5:29,30?

Or how about:
"And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them."

Again, do you tithe(Mt. 23:23), "..show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them"(Mt. 8:4), be circumcized......Matthew, Mark, Luke, John-all "law ground".

Again, do you follow the Lord Jesus Christ in circumcision(Luke 2:21)? Do you follow Him in going to the synagogue on the Sabbath day(Luke 4:16)?

Have you sold all your possesions? The Lord Jesus Christ commanded his disciples to:

Command given: Mt. 19:21' Mk. 10:21;Luke 12:33,18:22
Command obeyed: Mt. 19:27;Mk. 10:28;Luke 5:11, 18:28; Acts 2:44-45,4:32,34
Penalty for disobedience-death-Acts 5:1-11

Do you have "...all things common...": Acts 2:44, 4:32-34, 3:6

"They did so out of obedience to Christ."

Yes, because, again, baptism was one of the righteous reqirements of the Law:

"And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness." Mt. 3:15

Are you under the Law? Apparently so.

If you are not obeying all of this, you are "willfully disobey(ing) Christ -no other conclusion. The truth is, all christians "rightly divide" the Bible, and distinguish between God's different dealings with mankind under different dispensations. Most, for example, in the most obvious example, distinguish between the OT and the NT. I am just showing you the proper division with regards to the forgiveness issue. You just won't obey the command to rightly divide with regards to this issue, and thus misunderstand the cross of cross and it's finality.

So, according to you, obeying Christ is not for Christians. I was wondering if you think it's possible for a Christian to sin?

No, Ebb. That isn't what he said at all.:(

We have NEW instructions to follow. We aren't responsible to follow instructions given to the Nation Israel.

Of course a Christian can sin...LOL...we do it every day. The issue is, do you still think God is dealing with us on the basis of our sins? What do you think happened at Calvary?

The sin issue has been dealt with ONCE and for all. Jesus wasn't kidding around when He said, "IT IS FINISHED".

This is why its so important to know what Gospel it IS that we are told to believe today. If we dont think that sin is a finished topic with God then we will be focused on our sins instead of on our NEW identity and walking in newness of LIFE.

So...what is the gospel YOU believed?
