I just bought an external hard drive of 80 gb to backup my data, and I was wondering how many gigabytes do most people have. Are you ever going to use that much space?

I've seen hard drives up to 300gb, but are you ever going to use that much space?

I have 4 pc's at home:
Toshiba 20GB
Compaq 80GB
IBM 30GB with 80GB external drive
Dell 40GB

Total 250 GB

I'm pushing 135 right now.. I have an 80 GB drive in m computer, and my iPod is also used for data storage(total 40GB)... Not backup mind you, but storage. Then, I have a superdrive for buring DVDs, which are more archives than backups... I just burn the info I rarely use, then delete from the drive... I'm looking into getting one of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148067
But i'll probably will not actually end up getting it, I have other stuff, not computer related, I need/want more...

Amazingly though, that Seagate drive is $.58c/GB... Wow...:D

Well I picked 11 to 40 because my laptop has 30 on it but we have two more computers. Those other two are not mine though so I do not store stuff on them. My husband I think has 120 and my daughters got at least 40 I do not remember. I need more than 30 but that is what this came with lol I just burn things off to get more room on here. I just got the laptop for college. When I graduate I want a better laptop.

I've got 2 X 250G 1 80G (soon to be replaced), and am looking at adding a few 300G SATA Drives.

Why ?

I use them for DVD Storage right now, that way I can call up any movie to watch on the fly :)
Indeed, video is just plain MEAN to drives... I'm storing MiniDV videos on my computer. The actual movie files themself are too big to fit on either dvds or my iPod (which is used for other data,) So they just sit on my drive eating up 45 or so GB.

My main hard drive on my laptop has 6 GB's....please refran from laughing ;)

I have a Seagate external 120 GB hard drive that I use for my pictures...I have over 4,000 pictures currently on there and that only uses about 6 GB's, so I have enough for a while....

Space available: 126 GB
Space used: 8 GB's

LOL!!

I went into a used computer store the other day and they have a lot of old refurbished computers and computer parts for sale. They had a shelf of old hard drives..Western Digitals and Maxtors at about 350 megabytes, or so, some of them..probably from the early 90's. But they were the same size as today's hard drives (from looking at them), just a lot smaller capacity. The price of these small drives was about $5. The biggest one was 3 GB for $25.

But since Best Buy had a brand new 80 GB one for $29 (after rebates), I bought the one from Best Buy.

I just wonder how they squeezed all those gigabytes in to the same space (a 3.5" drive) as the older ones?

Western Digital 320gb SATA (because it was only $114)
Seagate 80gb SATA
IOMEGA 250gb external (weekly backup drive)

I do video editing and keep all the edited and rendered video which takes up enormous amounts of space so surprisingly for my needs yes I need it.
