  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How many child-frees have pets as 'babies?'

I'm talking about feeding dogs expensive dog food and stakes, treating animals like babies, maybe putting sweaters on them, doting on them, treating them like family?

What about folks here? Is that more common among those who don't want to have children (and don't have them)?

I have had at least one dog since I moved out of my parents' home, and they are definitely members of my family. I love them and would do anything for them to give them happy, healthy lives. This includes not overindulging them, not spoiling them, training them to be safe and respectful, and allowing them to be the dogs that they are.

I feed my dog healthy food without animal byproducts, and I choose grain free for her because she has allergies. Her food is therefore more expensive than Purina. I don't give her steaks, but I do let her share a little of our food after we've finished our meal. Dogs are community animals and this not only forges bonds, but also reinforces her placement in our "pack".

I do admit to dressing her up for our annual Christmas card. :p

She is a family member. I call her baby, in the sense of asking my husband, "Where's the baby?" or instructing her with, "Come on baby, let's go outside", and when I snuggle with her and pet her, I'll tell her what a beautiful baby she is and other cooing niceties. I don't know if that equates to treating her like an actual baby, but I am definitely showing her love and affection.

In case I haven't said it enough times, she is a member of our family. :)

Most, but not all, child free people that I know personally are animal lovers and have at least one animal. I do know some who don't care for the restrictions of freedom, and the time commitment, that animals require of them, so they avoid having pets.

I'm not too crazy over my cats, but I do love them- I have three (should have stopped at 2 but hubby and I fell in love with the 3rd one :) ). Since I teach about 140 students, that kind of takes care of the "I want to have children" side of things. So right now, between having cats and teaching, I'm okay.

Not very "Christian" but hubby and I realize we're not quite ready to have children yet.

There's nothing un-Christian about that. All of us who post regularly here are Christians and not planning on having children.

I've been with my wife for 10 years, 4 of those Married.

We've had dogs for 9 years and treat them as children as we don't have any kids yet. They've bought so much to our lives that I couldn't treat them any other way.

They're well behaved but yes... Are allowed on the sofa and go to the vets way more than we ever go to the Doctors! The slightest thing and they're there being checked up!

We've got two cats who rule the roost. English is my first language but not my husband's; he speaks English baby-talk to them because I do - it's really funny!
And the cats chirp back!

When I was a kid, I dressed up my cats in doll clothes, but I've outgrown that one :p

It's funny though because we when got the cats from the shelter, one was sick for a good while and my husband and I joked about what good birth control it was to deal with just a sick cat. That was even before we began talking about childfreedom specifically/concretely, so the cats have ended up being helpful to us on our journey!

I do daydream about getting more cats... when we have a bigger place. I'd like to build them a pen in the backyard with a tree in the middle

we have 2 rescue mutts (dogs). Adopted the first one when our adoption attempt fell through, adopted the second one because I'm a sucker. They're known as "the boys". They're both pretty big so they both have been through obedience school. They're tons of fun and I can't imagine life without them.

There is nothing "not very Christian" about not having children. :) I stumbled across this Christian article about being childfree by choice and I think you might enjoy reading it ...

My collegue could ' t get kids, she also could ' t adopt them and saw her cat a bit as a kid. He walked away and they have a big road behind their house so I reckoned he was dead, was gone for three days. She immediately bought two new ones. I sat in the bus and God said: pray for the cat. I thought: Why? He's dead, but I did, lol next day I had her husband on the phone, he came back. Now they had three.

I always saw my cat as a substitute for my twin brother who died. When the cat died he had to be replaced immediately.
