I usually read more than one at a time. I almost always have a non-fiction book on poker going(Ace on the River by Barry Greenstein right now), a second non-fiction science book that I plug through (Demske's Intelligent Design. I know it is not science, but you can learn stuff by seeing what not to do as well.), and a few fiction works as well(Portnoy's Complaint by Philip Roth - I may not be artistic enough or something, I'm not really liking it, The Complete Hammer's Slammers Volume One by David Drake, and The Born Queen by Greg Keyes. ) Which one I pick up at any given time depends on my mood or what book is in the room I am in at the time.

I have a book in every room of the house where I spend time, so I'm reading about 4 at a time right now. I also keep one in my bag, car, or on my iPod so I have something to read while I'm out.

If I'm reading fiction I have to stick to just one book. But when I read nonfiction I can read a few at a time. It really depends on what I'm doing, or what's going on in my life. Sometimes I'll start reading a second (or third) book if I think it will help me with my job or help a friend with a problem.

But I certainly prefer to stick to one book at a time. That way I feel like I'm accomplishing something. :)

I was reading Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. I became a little disinterested and stopped. I'm now reading Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie. I read really fast though so I have two more Christie lined up: Murder of Roger Ackroyd and Murder on the Orient Express.

For good fiction, I've just started reading the (at least 20) stories by Kinky Friedman. Didn't think I'd like them, but they were well written and a good mystery!
If one likes childrens books of high quality, I recommend any by Eleanor Estes.
