We don't often use the creeds in our liturgy,

The Episcopalians fortunately continue to use the Nicene Creed and the Apostles’ Creed at nearly every liturgy. In this respect they are quite conservative compared to other mainline denominations.

According to scripture when a non-christian dies, there is no pergatory - they will go to two separate places, and it is eternal! First when they die, they will go to hell, that is the waiting room; waiting for judgment. Then, in Revelation, it says that hell will be cast into the lake of fire.... That is the final destination for those without Jesus! No purgatory! Also no Christian churches pray for the dead. Heb 9:27, Is clear after you die you face judgment. Those is heaven are in glory, no need to pray for them; those in hell, it is to late, just wasting your prayers!

Why is it desired?

and

What is the purpose?

Prayer doesn't require those questions be answered through doctrinal precision of any kind. It's enough that it is desired.

If so, why did the early Christians prayed for the dead?

They didn't. The 1st century Christians did not. Then when Catholic church came, it adopted some pagan rituals including praying for the dead. Then when some of the early Christians broke off from the Catholic church, like Martin Luther, they kept some of the rituals like praying to the dead. But that is pagan not Biblical.

Neither the Oriental Orthodox nor the Eastern Orthodox have a doctrine of Purgatory, yet we have always prayed for our dead.

The Jews prayed for their dead. It had nothing to do with pagan rituals but was a continuation of the practice of the first Christians.

The Jews never prayed for the dead that was against the law, nor did the 1st Christian - the Christians prayed like Jesus commanded them to pray. To pray in faith to the Father in Jesus Name!
Originally, Yizkor was recited only on Yom Kippur. Its primary purpose was to honor the deceased by committing to giving tzedakah [charity] in their memory, on the theory that the good deeds of the survivors elevate the souls of the departed. It also enhanced the chances for personal atonement by doing a deed of lovingkindness. Since the Torah reading on the last day of the pilgrimage festivals [the holidays of Sukkot, Passover, and Shavuot] mentions the importance of donations, Yizkor was added to these holiday services as well.

I suspect you are confusing "praying for the dead" with "communicating with the dead".

The Jews have always prayed for the dead and so did all the early Christians. Where are you getting your information from?

Careful. Saying the Catholic Church has pagan rituals is against the forum rules, since we are indeed Christians.

My apoligies, I should have sead the early Catholic church adopted... and btw, just because someone adopts a practice that may have pagan roots, does not mean they are not Christian!

Also being a Catholic does not make one a Christian; any more than being a Mennonite (which I am by blood) makes me a Christian, or being a Lutheran a Christian. Being a Christian is simply the act of making Jesus Lord of your life. That is it, no matter who you are, or what denomination we are.

From the early church 1st century fathers, the early church writings
You will need to provide actual citations, which I suspect you will find difficult, seeing as what you claim isn't true at all.
