How is something like this even remotely possible nowadays?

Guy sounds a lot like many Democrats in the 50's and 60's.
You're right, a lot of Democrats were like that back in the 50's and 60's. Which is why the Republican "Southern Strategy" worked so well. As Nixon's political strategist Kevin Phillips said:
From now on, the Republicans are never going to get more than 10 to 20 percent of the Negro vote and they don't need any more than that... but Republicans would be shortsighted if they weakened enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. The more Negroes who register as Democrats in the South, the sooner the Negrophobe whites will quit the Democrats and become Republicans. That's where the votes are. Without that prodding from the blacks, the whites will backslide into their old comfortable arrangement with the local Democrats.

Robert Byrd comes to mind.
Yep he did indeed have quite a past. In the past. Of course he eventually out grew it. ;)

Why do you have to go back fifty years?

YouTube - Joe Biden's racist slip

"I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy," Biden said. "I mean, that's a storybook, man."

They put that guy in a high political office.

You only have to look to the most recent presidential campaign to find people that the Democrats put in high office making racist remarks.

Aaaaand, nobody condemns it. The right simply flock to attack perceived instances of racism gleaned form Democrat speeches. The man wrote an entire essay. don't even pretend it's on the same level as someone making a remark, which is likely just getting their words mixed up.

Of course we condemn it,... I condemn it. Racism isn't acceptable.

What? It's not like he's the Democrat choice for vice president or anything important like that, is he?

Can you think of a better way to combat serious assassination attempts then putting someone no one wants in power in the number two spot? ^_^
