  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How is everybody?

Hopefully well. Are you guys ready for fall?

What's the latest at your parishes and in your lives (if you care to share)?
I’ve been ok. I’m so done with summer! My parish has a school and regular activities throughout the year.

Been doing pretty good. Been having some kidney issues since I had pneumonia in February and three surgeries. Everything seems good now as far as I know. My niece had lymphoma and she has finished treatment so keeping a close eye on that. We just lost my husband’s cousin to pancreatic cancer. Mom and MIL seem to be doing fairly well. My sister believe it or not is looking into the Catholic Church. She is still struggling with her mental issues unfortunately. We have a new priest that started last July. Everyone likes him and he seems to be very true to the Gospel and not so worried to conforming to world views as we so often see. How are things your way? :)

Forgot to mention my bil and aunt. Bil had a cancerous kidney removed and we are praying for no return of cancer. Also my aunt is scheduled for surgery in Nashville this upcoming week. She has an aneurysm in her aorta. Very dangerous so we’d all appreciate prayers if it crosses your mind. :praying: It’s been a year of a lot of health issues on both sides of the family.

Hey, Gnarly---good to see you! :)

It's been a wild and wooly summer. Momma had to go in for a total hysterectomy from April through July; she's on the mend. The kid started school, quit school, and is looking for a full-time job. He feels bad about dropping out, but I told him it is virtually impossible for a man to make a fatal career mistake before the age of 30 or so.....or at least, it didn't in my day, lol.

And me, well, I just get older and stiffer and unable to do more things as time goes on. I will be 65 on December 2nd, and I feel every year of it. :( All those years as a combat engineer in the military and pounding pavement as a beat cop have taken their toll on my body....and yet, I just keep chugging along.

Overall, I can't complain. I have enough to eat and a roof over my head, and I am definitely looking forward to the cooler weather. A lot of leaves have started to change up here in northern Michigan, mostly ferns, sassafras, sumac and some of the trees; some of the sugar maples are a bright flaming red already. If it gets cold enough to kill all the bugs, I'll be happy. :)

I’m SO ready for fall. I hate this heat and we haven’t had rain in a long time. We’ve got rain and lower temps in the forecast, so that’s good.

There's something I love about the energy this time of year when schools start up and we're transitioning from summer to fall.

Wow 2025 sure has been loaded for you and your family. My goodness. Well, I'm glad things are looking better with your kidneys and I'm happy to hear that your sister is looking at Catholicism. Though, I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your husband's cousin.

In all likelihood your son is better off, unless someone's aiming to be a lawyer, doctor, or teacher, it's really hard for me to see the benefit of college anymore. Especially four-year institutions. The fact that so many people can get tech certifications from community colleges and go on to make great livings with zero debt and support families is kind of proof of that. So whatever your son ends up doing I'm sure it'll work out. It's hard to know what you want to do at that age anyway, especially for us guys.

I bet with the colder air settin in your startin to feel it even more in the joints, eh?

Those fall colors and temperatures sure are a welcome sight and sensation, I'll tell you that!

Me too. We've had a milder summer than usual but it's still nice to dip out of the 100s (hopefully for good this year) and even out of the 90s. It's almost as predictable as the sunrise that the real fall temps don't arrive here until the 3rd week of October, but I tell ya what when those overnight lows drop into the 40s that's when I'm a happy camper. I love waking up to that brisk fall morning air.

Oh, yeah. My wife has a big autumn craft thingie that she organizes and goes to every October; I've been helping her out as I've been able. Today I stood on a concrete floor and steam-ironed fabric for her for about four hours. Right now, my lower back and my feet are having a big screaming match to see which one can hurt more than the other. Oy. :(

Fortunately I'm going into the closest large town tomorrow to go to confession (we have dinner guests coming on Saturday, and I won't be able to get to my own parish, since I'll be setting up for that), and since I'm going to be down there anyway, I'll make a swing by my chiropractor's office and get cracked. That should help. VA pays for it (as they do for all of my medical bills) so I got that going for me.

It was getting really nice here, week before last; we even had one night where it frosted lightly. But then it warmed back up into the mid-80s and it got buggy again. Supposedly it's supposed to cool off into the weekend, highs in the 70s; we'll see. But I won't be completely happy until it's cool enough to need a jacket outside.
